Last nights pitch invader vs Brighton

I know a lad from when we was in the prem got a 3 year ban for entering a football ground whilst drunk at birmingham.

Running on to the pitch is a criminal offence the club dealt with him without police or courts. He quite easily could of been charged. upto a £1000 pound fine and a 3 year football ban. I was only saying think yourself lucky on what he got.

And if I had heard of that, I would have been just as outraged as I am for this.

and just because he could have got an even more ridiculous punishment, doesn't mean that we shouldn't stand up for someone who is being treated this over zealous by the club.

Maybe if the fans stood up for each other and showed their disgust towards the club when they do things like this, they would think twice before throwing bans around.

On the flip side, think of if they didn't hand bans out, we had numerous pitch invaders and the FA decided to play a game behind closed doors.

Would you be happy?

disgust the club could of pressed charges against him that would of bought a fine, 3 year england and wales football ban and maybe community service, he only recived a stadium ban.

It's the police that apply for banning orders not the club.

All these people rejoicing in the lad having the book thrown at him is a bit perverse tbh. It's a good job these people aren't in charge of sentencing in the legal system. Example: maximum penalty for theft is 7 years, but you're highly unlikely to get any sort of custodial sentence for nicking a bottle of wine off the shelf before going guilty and saying sorry. The same people on here would be saying "you knew you could get into a lot of trouble doing that", "think yourself lucky it wasn't the maximum of 7 years", "if it deters other people from nicking then so be it", "serves him right being an idiot" etc. The guy had a lapse in judgement and has shown contrition, it goes without saying that "he should have known better" but that doesn't mean he deserves to be banned from an entire season of home games. The fact that worse punishments exist is irrelevant, as my theft example should demonstrate.

This isn't the 70's mate. If the club had handed out an end of season ban we wouldn't be looking at people running on the pitch every game we ever play at home.

I'm not saying it is and I'm not saying it's likely to happen but my point is there has to be some punishment to deter people.

Yes, till the end of next season is a bit extreme but is the club want to keep fans off the pitch it's fair to say that will do the job.

the stadium ban comes from the club by post.

A club ban and a 3 year banning order are 2 different things.

The police apply for football banning orders and the club deal with stadium bans. Both have nothing to do with the other.

I think banning him till the end of this season would have been sufficient. Maybe even banning him for the first couple of home games next season even.

fvck me, some comments in this thread are depressing.

He didn't run on and lamp a player in the face or put up a struggle, not really a proportional punishment is it? Wish we had some kind of fan solidarity.

neither did the yeovil fan.

Yes and the club would of needed to press charges against the offender for it to go to court. Then the police can apply for the banning order

It's almost as if you didn't read anything I said. It's irrelevant that it could have been worse. Like I said, if the Magistrate gave you 6 months in prison for a first-time offence of stealing a bottle of wine off the shelf (and apologising and going guilty), it would not make you feel less aggrieved that, ignoring non-binding sentencing guidelines, the statutory maximum was 7 years. It's still excessive. Read what people are telling you and it might change your mind, and changing your mind is a good thing.

The club are well within their rights to ban the lad. The pitch invader broke the rules, not the club. That said I'm still disappointed they are going to ban him for the whole of next season.

No ones denying that mate, the club are within their rights to ban the lad forever unless he turns up every game with no shoes on. They can make what ever rule up they want.

We are talking about how ridiculously over the top the ban length is.

Is it really any surprise? They were always going to make an example of anyone that went on the pitch. The risks were apparent from the start.

Doesn't make it right. The fact we're not surprised when the club acts like this speaks volumes about the guys behind the scenes......

Wow really?

People get 3 year banning orders for organising mass brawls at the football and you think running on a bit of grass after a game is worth the same punishment?

The attitude of some fans towards this is pathetic.

The lads spot on he's very lucky to get stadium ban as said in another thread a friend of mine ran onto the pitch at Watford away, end of last season made it to the goal post if that and he got 3 year football ban in United Kingdom and £300 fine!

thats all I was trying to say. The club have done the guy a favour in my eyes by not getting the police involved.

In the play off game? while the pitch was full of Watford fans?

Can't help but feel like he might have been running on the pitch to do a bit more than run around a bit?

I don't think you quite understand how banning orders work.

The club don't ask for them, the police do. The police decided not to get involved (probably because they realised it would get thrown out of court)

ii know they dont god. For the police to apply the club would of had to press charges against him for it to go to court. Im quite sure it wouldnt of been thrown out of court had charges been made against him.
