Stand up for the champions

Recommended Posts

12 years ago as our premier league campaign was reaching an end Man United were in town hammering the final nail in our coffin. As they sang 'down in ten minutes, your going down in ten minutes' and then nine and eight something magical happened in a drab disappointing season stopping them dead, and those that were there will never forget it, it still sends shivers down my spine now. A little used chant started somewhere behind me in sk1, 'stand up if you love Leicester', this quickly spread through the Kop east, north and main stands till every man women and child was standing singing a passionate farewell to the premier league. It was more than a farewell it was showing a recognition of a short but glorious era we had been through. A nod to decking Wembley out in blue and white season after season as the famous old stadium thundered to the balloons and and roar of the 40,000 loyal Leicester fans that made the annual pilgrimage. A final wave to the scores of fans who would pack motorway bridges and Narborough road greeting the troops home win or lose. And finally an acknowledgement to the players that will remain long in the memory of the City fans who experienced that decade.

As reported in the media at the time we won a lot of support from the man united fans that day for 'showing class, and dignity' in our sad demise. Despite a return the following year it was nothing more than a fatally wounded animal lashing out.

Roll on to today and this season. Finally we have seen a glimpse of a team that looks every bit as capable of rolling us into another glorious new era. The club is better run with owners who care and have ambition, a manager who the players play for and a team harnessing a blend of skill, determination and spirit, a team that I feel will give us a new generation of club legends.

So today when we sing 'stand up for the champions', everyone stand up and sing proudly, those who were there that day against Man United take that and enjoy the feeling, the contrast of emotions, for today when we sing we will be acknowledging the birth of a new era. Get behind the team today, whether it's your first game of the season or 46th, we all love this great club.

Everybody is going to be smashed from the free beer so nobody can stand up, Kevin Barclay has spiked all of them personally in his campaign against safe standing.
