I'm no expert on this but I'm sure North Koreans can get South Korean television, and a lot of those in the North of the country travel quite freely between NK and China for work where they can get relatively realistic news. I get the impression that most North Koreans know what's what, but are just powerless. Also no doubt there's plenty of Western bias in what we hear about it, even more so in the US I expect where they probably use North Korean society as an implied threat to keep the population placid and accepting of "necessary" measures.
