What is The Best Sports Team Of All Time?

Won domestic trophies at a time that Arsenal also had a fantastic side. Won the Champions League, arguably more difficult to win than the old European Cup.

If they're not the best UK side who is?

Not really.

Because to win the old European Cup you had to be the domestic Champions in your country, on that basis Man United wouldn't have even qualified for the Champions League the treble winning season.

Being a great side is more than just a season, look at all them teams mentioned in that BBC link, New Zealand are dominating the sport since 2011, Spain's side were the best side in the world for 3 major tournaments across 4 years and Pep's Barcelona won a treble and 14 trophies in four years. Does one domestic treble really compare to any of them? For me no.

Man United didn't win a trophy the season before the treble and they followed the treble up with just the League title, yes the Treble is one amazing achievement but a great side win trophies season after season.

I'm biased but the side Bob Paisley had from 1974-83 was a better side than Ferguson's treble winning side, 6 Leagues, 3 European Cups, a UEFA Cup and 3 League Cups.. 3 European trophies in a row.

The 1996-2000 New York Yankees would probably also make that list.

That's the best baseball team of my lifetime--the 1998 team was particularly outstanding. However, I'd say the "Murderer's Row" 1927 Yankees have got to be the greatest baseball team of all time. Their legacy is timeless.

Fair points but I'm talking about winning the CL rather than what it took to qualify for it. Less games, more even spread of teams from lesser footballing nations meant that you could get to the final beating a team like Dinamo Dresden or CSKA Sofia in the later rounds.

Domestically United dominated that era. In don't know enough about Paisley's Liverpool and it's probably impossible to compare them as teams. Two great sides for sure...

I can't stand Liverpool.  I can't stand Hansen, Lawrenson, Souness, Dalgleish, Clemence or Thompson.  I grew up watching Liverpool winning everything & Leicester winning nothing.  All my mates were Liverpool fans.

I hate to admit it, but the Paisley team pisses all over Man Utd's treble winners

I'd say the Liverpool team of around 77-84 was at least as good as the United treble team.

The 49ers team of the 80s?

Red Bull over the last few years of F1? Or Ferrari just before that? Or Williams or McLaren in the 80/90s?

All this poll proves is that people don't think far beyond what has happened recently and that many people are glory-hunting Man Ure fans.

Worth bearing in mind that that Manchester United side got out of a group with Barcelona and Bayern, beat Inter and Juventus in the knockouts and then beat Bayern in the final. I'd say that that's a more impressive achievement than beating the champions of East Germany and Northern Ireland amongst others.

Obviously they're nowhere near the best sports side of all time though.

Personally I think that Australian cricket side of about 1994-2004 has to be right up there. Absolutely no weaknesses; it's insane that Stuart MacGill, Greg Blewett and Stuart Law barely got a look in in that side; they'd all get into any side in the world right now.

The Aussie cricket side was something else, quality through and through and when a quality player went down someone just as good would step up.

Would pay good money to see them in their prime against the Windies of the 80s.

For me to be a great sports team it needs I be done over a consistent period not a one off season, no matter how good that season was.

The All Blacks have dominated Rugby Union, and possibly pip the Aussie cricket side as the best of all time.

From a football point of view the Liverpool side of the 70s 80s I think still edges the united side of te 90s.

There have been some great Barca, Real and AC Milan sides of the last 40 odd years too.

The current Byern team are my favourite sports team to watch at the minute.

The way they took apart Roma in Italy last week was different class.

Shock one of the few closet Man United fans comes in here to defend them..

My favourite sides:

Liverpool 1977 - would win the European cup in any era; their demolition of the champions of Northern Ireland, Turkey (then a total footballing backwater), France and Switzerland en route to the final certainly gets the juices flowing.

Liverpool 1978 - Played a whopping 6 games to reach the final, it's a small wonder they had any energy left to beat the Belgian champions in the final.

Liverpool 1983 - Waltzed past the champions of Finland, Scotland and Bulgaria to reach the semis. Then admittedly beat the Spanish and west German champions.

Liverpool 1984 - TBF I don't have a leg to stand on with that run, it's a toughie - Spain, Italy, Germany amongst others.

Anyway, aside from your wumming, do you think that it's easier to win it now or in the past? Obviously from your perspective your team won it recently with a crap side so perhaps that fuels your opinion as much as the nostalgia in the Liverpool fanbase.

It's a lot easier to win it now, purely because before you had to actually win the league just to qualify. A fourth place team shouldn't IMO have the vagrancy to be crowned champions of Europe.

I understand that argument but I really don't think it holds up in the example that Grandad was referencing.

The whole point of that treble is what the achieved in that one season (1998-99), not what they failed to achieve the year before.

Anyway this is a stupid argument because we were talking about the greatest sports teams ever and there's not a cat in hell's chance they belong in that category, which is something we're all agreed on.

No my original point was that the old European Cup you had to be Champions to qualify for the tournament or reigning Champions of the European Cup, on that basis Man United wouldn't have even qualified for the Champions League in 1998/99. So much easier to win now, teams finishing 4th in the League are qualifying and winning the Champions League, Liverpool and Chelsea have both finished 5th in the Premier League and qualified..

You seem to forget about Liverpool winning the Champions League in 2005 when talking about our FIVE European Cup wins, beat the Greek champions, Italian champions and English champions before beating that fantastic AC Milan side in the final, but that's a whole different story.

You must be a Man United fan because you are the only person I have ever seen on here try and discredit a side winning the European Cup and mocking the opposition faced to win the competition. Typical Manc behaviour.

People have agreed with me, the Liverpool side under Paisley was better than the treble side who had a very good year but only followed it up with a League title the next year.

At no point did I have a go at that Liverpool 2005 side. If anything I deliberately brought it up so I wouldn't get the usual paranoid diatribe moron you. Guess what? I got it anyway.
