Coaching

As we enter the final 3rd of the season one thing apart from blaming Pearson for most things, I am questioning what the coaches including Pearson have been doing.

I will start with our strikers.. We have a massive lack of composure up front, make poor runs , don't hold the ball up well and generally have been poor. so my question is what has KP been doing in training to improve things as I have not seen any improvement all season.

Midfield... don't really know where to start but this has been a disaster area all season, we don't know who is our best combination, we lack drive and strength and always take too many touches mainly backwards rather than be aware of who is around and let the ball run across you moving forward... what is CS doing as this has been a problem area.

Defence... too many issues to address but who is coaching Wes he gets his body in bad positions hence his own goals, near own goals and numerous sliced clearances. The general shape is poor, we give away poor goals, we have not conceded that many wonder goals.. lose runners, get the wrong side or caught out of position... NP as an ex center half must know by now how to defend or at least set up a tighter ship.

Anyway I just thought  I would say that despite his many huge mistakes this season, square pegs in round holes, lack of quality signings and generally being a miserable T**t he cant just be blamed on his own...

I await the abuse from the happy clappers but unlike some I will be there again on Saturday supporting the team and hoping we somehow claw our way out of this, as thinking we will just roll back into the Championship and bounce straight back with NP in charge is misguided. Look at Wigan, Cardiff, Blackburn, Blackpool etc

Lets hope that the fact that the bottom 6/7 are all fairly shite means we are still in with a chance... Saturday is massive

A coach can bring the best out of a player, and they can advise on techniques and application. However they can't put in what isn't there in natural ability. NP seems to have believed that a good number of players could make the grade in the Premier League, IMO that hasn't happened to the extent necessary for survival so he has had to bring in new players.

I agree that relegation does not mean that we would be going straight back up, we'll lose our best players and have to re-develop in some areas. To move forward we need to survive this season and strengthen over the summer.

Coaching isn’t going to make a massive difference over just half a season.

The best Coach in the World isn’t going to change the habits of a football lifetime in just 6 months.

What’s missing is that the players often don’t have a clear understanding of their roles in the team. This needs to come from the Manager.

You could make Jamie Vardy do nothing but shooting practice for 8 hours a day, every day for 10 years, but it’s useless if you don’t play a midfielder who can pick him out with slide-rule passes.

You could force King and Drinky to do 1,000,000 keepie-ups every day until their touch is near perfect. But that’s no use if you put them in a midfield where they are always out-numbered by 3 opponents.

You could make Marc Albrighton practice crosses all day so that he can put it on a sixpence every time. But that’s no use if you then put 5 foot 8 Dave Nugent up front on his own.

The tactics are just so wrong so often that it’s impossible to say what effect the coaches have been having this season.

Since Kevin Phillips was appointed to his role our forwards have stopped making all the runs that brought the whole team goals last year, and our forwards make poor shooting Vs passing choices, along with awful composure in front of goal

Causation or just a correlation?

Correlation I suspect with the step up, plus our strikers were never particularly clinical in the championship, we just created so many chances that they scored plenty anyway.

It's the coaching of attacking set pieces which bothers me, as I can't for the life of me see any work that goes into them. We don't have a natural corner taker which can't be resolved on the training ground (although I thought Albrighton would be the obvious choice when he's playing), but there's no originality, we don't attack the ball well, the movement is rubbish and as a result we rarely score from them.

Look at Man Utd's third on Saturday. Blind makes to the run to the near post to get the flick on in front of Ulloa, the ball is perfect and it's in our net (with a slice of bad luck, granted.) We never do anything like that. It's not just this season either - we've been shit at them for years. I've seen it mentioned before that Stowell (I think? I may be mistaken - it's one of the current coaches anyway) deals with them, which would explain a lot. Surely we could do with a specialist as something needs to be done.

I think coaching can have an impact on how to line up for set pieces and what to do with them - tactics, if you like.

But these are professional footballers in the Premier League - is any sort of coach going to make them "better"?

I don't think the players need coaching to improve their ability just need to get the best out of then and recognise and play to their strengths. Playing a 10m goal poacher on the wing is not that.

True, but he has pace... we know Man Utd are one of the best possession sides around and at their place with one of the world's best attacking lineups, the idea was obvious to hit them on the break, but the players couldn't get a foothold in the game to even attempt to unlock the pace of Schlupp/Vardy on the wings until ManUtd rested after scoring 3 so it ultimately didn't work

To counterattack you need to defend in numbers and then break with pace, but for some reason despite the dismal results we've not tactically changed to adopt CDMs within our midfield duo

There's no doubt that the coaching at our club is very poor. I don't know who is responsible. There evidence of it every week. Poor passing poor set pieces. poor shooting poor positional sense choosing the wrong options and I could go on. But the biggest failure is it seems nobody is doing anything about it.

The great Bill Shankly despite singing many very talented players for Liverpool in the 60s insisted that they practiced their kicking in the wooden box he had constructed every day as part of their training.

He was wise enough to know that if you cannot kick the ball properly then you will always struggle to play good football consistently. How many times has James shot from the edge of the Box and puts it over every time, simply he doesn't get his body over the Ball.

Look at Eriksen from Spurs look how easy he makes it look. That's from spending hour after hour just kicking balls against a wall. The more it's done the better the player becomes at receiving the ball and then kicking it back again. This means on match days you can assess the ball much quicker and deliver a better result be it a pass or a shot.

Clever fox?

Backwards fox is more like it

Our style of play is very different to the M O'N era but we were then very effective from set pieces.

That is something that is worked out in training.

Even last season, against lesser defences,we did not take enough advantage of set plays (other than penalties!)

Sometimes you have to go backwards to move forwards. But then I suspect your not old enough to know that.

If it worked for liverpool during their most successful period ever, then it's good enough for us. But then they had the greatest manager the game has ever seen.
