Doh!!!

Nearly seven per cent of the votes in the city mayor election were rejected – a total of 9,482 – and most of the problems were put down to confusion.

Miranda Cannon, returning officer for Leicester, said: "Because it's a different voting system with two preferences there have been a lot of rejected ballot papers.

"In many cases people have voted for just one candidate but put their mark in the right hand column, which is the column for the second choice.

"The Electoral Commission has said that in those cases we're to reject the ballot papers.

"It's unfortunate but it's something we also saw a lot of in the police and crime commissioner elections."

She said that in total 3,174 votes had been rejected because the voter had picked too many mayoral candidates and 6,304 were rejected because of "uncertainty" – mostly because the second choice had been given but no first choice.

A further four ballot papers were rejected due to voters writing something that could be used to identify them on their voting paper.
