Siege Mentality

I've always been a supporter of Pearson, but just recently, my faith has been sorely shaken.  The decent patch of form following our terrible run convinced me that Pearson was finally getting it together in this league.  But...that hasn't continued, we again don't seem able to get a win.

Apart from directly after a game, when I am more reactive and less rational, I haven't really believed we would get relegated either.  That has changed, I do think we have too much to do now.  After pulling back to only being 3 points behind safety, only to blow chance after chance to get back in the mix, it is pretty demoralising to see the gap widening again.

So, I don't think Pearson has done enough to prove he should manage the club in the PL.  I also don't think we are quite good enough to stay in the PL as things stand.

Which brings me (finally) to my point.  Due to the constant media criticism of our manager's reasonable (to me) reluctance to be open with them, I am finding it really hard to not be steadfastly on his side.  This maybe explains the excellent performance last night too.  You could see how gutted Wes was to have lost his man in the box.  You could see how hard players were trying to get something out of the game.  For me, this seemed beyond professionalism.

I wonder whether our secret weapon in achieving and unlikely escape this season could be a siege mentality?

Has the recent media criticism actually brought everyone around the club together?

We PLAYED well last night probally didn't deserve a loss, but it's still a loss, but it's the games like, Stoke, west brom, Sunderland, palace, at home that we should be winning and we're not, cannot se us beating hull or qpr at home neither,

You are right.  Heroic performances against Arsenal, Liverpool and Man U must be backed up with reasonable success against teams around us in the table, and they haven't been.

But does the recent media criticism mean we are more likely to get something in these narrow games due to a previously missing psychological edge?

Hopefully, roll on Sunday, where it might prove costly for the losing manager

It's still not the end of the world. Nothing preventing us from going on a run of a couple of wins, couple of draws and things will really start to look better. If we play consistently like we did last night, and can finally start hitting the back of the net we're going to be picking up points like a mid-table team, will that be enough to see us to safety, well of course it depends on the rest of the teams performances.

No. They lifted their performance out of necessity last night. If theyd not played to the level they did, and Arsenal had played to the level they are capable of, then it could have been a cricket score. So for me its not a "siege mentality" that brought that performance.

Its a WEAK mentality that they cant take the game by the scruff of the neck and beat the teams we have to be beating to stay up. Its mental weakness that the players crumble in front of goal, or cant stay switched on defensively.

That said, i hope the PERFORMANCE last night, which was absolutely excellent, will give the side a psychological edge against the smaller teams. It is not over, and even in defeat, we have a system and a performance to build on

Like deucalion says, it's means nothing playing well against the better teams (still losing) then us not backing it up at home to teams around us, we've been here so many times this season!! Will it change? I hope so, but tbf I doubt it

I reckon Pearson has bought himself some more time with the owners. I think he will get until the Hull game and if he doesn't win that then they will probably get rid of him.

If we get relegated, then I hope Pearson is still here, otherwise some idiots would blame any new manager.

As I have said previously, if he keeps us up, then he will have proved himself; if not, then sack him.

A siege mentality suggests to me that we would be grinding out draws and narrow wins. I don't see that, the players are still producing some positive moves and it appears that they genuinely believe that they will get the necessary results.

We've opened games quite timidly far too often, trying to stay in the game being tight and not conceding only to look comfortable for a period of time before making a complete gaff of something and losing a goal or two.  We need to go for it early and try and get that first goal then implement a siege mentality preserving it.  It always seems to be the other way round though; too little too late, which applies to most of our games individually and probably now to our entire season of games collectively.

There is still hope though, huth/upson/kramaric/mahrez and maybe even allbrighton could help us improve as they get more game time especially in those games against teams of similar ability to ours, where thus far we've not showed our true potential or not been able to eek out that elusive result, with the exception of a couple of results.  The tide may yet turn for us, so don't give up.  We could seriously do with a result against everton though, but first things first - lets stuff the villains and get a q/f fa cup place then we're playing for a trip to Wembley which may just soften the blow if we get relegated.

Do you not think he is the best man to bring us back up?

I said this the other week on another forum, that Pearson is trying to create a Leicester vs the rest of the world mentality. Similar to Mourinho. For me, he's purposely attacking people so people talk negatively about us and the players give that much more extra. Maybe I'm wrong and over analysing, but recently we've seen another side to the usually calm, unflappable Pearson.
