  1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I love this film. It's "genuine", heartfelt, a time capsule of what late 70ies/early 80ies US high schools looked and felt like. Hugely influential on pop culture also because of the Valley lingo used (in particular by Sean Penn's character). Speaking of cast, there's so many actors who later became big. To see Nic Cage, Eric Stoltz, Penn, Reinhold, Forest Whitaker in their younger years... And then there are Jennifer Jason Leigh and Phoebe Coates and their respective bikini scenes. Plus, the soundtrack is top-notch. Small cameo by Nancy Wilson (Heart), Cameron Crowe's girlfriend at the time.
  2. Climate change isn't a game of six-month-windows or measured in six months... because six months later, all the progress will have evaporated (and then some). And in the case of China, the likelihood is very high. Again, no comment on the security issues on Chinese work sites in Africa, the low pay, the disregard for human life, et cetera. Nothing to do with workers' exploitation, or some sort of modern slavery (which is going stronger today than ever before). That's "doing business the right way rather than stomping colonial boots and offering ridiculously lop-sided deals because of the power disparity between the parties involved", I guess. That's the PR machinery that you buy into. The US have made great strides in recent years in terms of renewable energy: https://www.wri.org/insights/clean-energy-progress-united-states Sadly, Trump doesn't like solar and wind energy that much (I think he's wrong on solar energy – the impact/effect of wind energy, however, is debatable). https://www.econotimes.com/What-are-Donald-Trumps-views-on-renewable-energy-investments-in-2025-1698169 I'm a big proponent of public transport. In the US, those projects have a tough time coming to fruition. As an example, the bullet train line project between San Francisco and Los Angeles is a mess (note California has been under Democrat leadership for decades now): https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-08-20/house-committee-investigation-california-high-speed-rail-project However, with all that need for additional power (the article highlights data centers in particular), it'd be foolish to think we'd be able to cover it all by renewable energies only. At least for now. A mix is needed. The challenge is the race between the technological advancements and the global population growth. Electric cars and the constant rise in electrical appliances all require more energy. The biggest driver is... Africa. It's only a matter of time before more coal or even nuclear power plants pop up on that continent. Because you cannot satisfy the demand by renewable energy alone (at first).
  3. 1% less CO2 emissions in a six-month window is laughable. Does the article also talk about the increase in emissions prior or the future development? Yes, it does, and it doesn't hold back: "However, they remain only 1% below the latest peak, implying that any short-term jump could cause China’s CO2 emissions to rise to a new record." https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-clean-energy-just-put-chinas-co2-emissions-into-reverse-for-first-time/ I wonder why you wouldn't mention that. Surely the "right direction"... Coming back to the topic here in terms of climate change and energy consumption, there's been hardly any criticism of China's role in Africa when it comes to obtaining raw materials: https://www.africansecurityanalysis.org/reports/china-s-strategic-engagement-in-africa https://nrdc-ita.nato.int/newsroom/insights/chinas-influence-in-africa-challenges-and-strategic-implications
  4. Non-sequitur to you. Yes, that's why they've built a record number of new coal plants. https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/chinas-commissioning-coal-power-9-year-high-first-half-report-says-2025-08-25/ If you look past the Party's statements, there's massive issues plaguing the country: https://thediplomat.com/2025/01/chinas-internal-struggles-the-rising-violence-that-could-lead-to-foreign-aggression/ Including how the government treats the Uyghurs (Muslims) in the far West. Setting up concentration camps doesn't evoke memories of 1930ies Hitler Germany? Also, a rising number of car attacks in China (the irony): https://apnews.com/article/china-vehicle-car-knife-attack-b1534d572f0f2b34f0d2f1bec109a693 All that talk about how bad it is in the US, while simultaneously turning a blind eye to China. I wonder why.
  5. Just as the Chinese do. By heavily relying on non-renewable resources and a very authoritarian political system (Big Brother, Social Credit). Where's Greta Thunberg when you really need her?
  6. Well done, Macclesfield!
  7. I'll have some moaning, too. Second half was a doozie.
  8. True, that – although there's group stages., too. I meant domestic cup competition.
  9. That was Daka's first cup competition goal for us, if I'm not mistaken.
  10. R.I.P. As I'm looking him up, I see he played in the US for Atlanta in the late 60ies. That must've been special.
  11. MK Dons and Forest out on the same night. At least some comfort.
  12. It's been a rocky start, tons of debates surrounding their D, and lots of complaints after that goalie trade. Six wins in a row now. And Crosby's on an eight-game scoring streak. Hot.
  13. Well, godspeed to whomever Cifuentes is fielding tomorrow. And just because it's Cheltenham doesn't mean we should take this lightly, but professional. Are the players up for it? Maybe we can string a series of good results together –a draw at Coventry, and wins against Wrexham, Oxford, Charlton. That'd be a big boost. But then again, one does never know what Leicester City FC shows up. One good game, followed by two, three disappointments. We've been stalling for too long. Or one good half, followed by a bad, sloppy one. We've been so inconsistent so far this season. I want to see more from the manager and the players. We lose this, and Cifuentes' job is on the line once again.
  14. Well, it was a Thursday evening game. Official sales numbers before the match were just under 10'000. https://uscremonese.it/cremonese-cagliari-chiusa-la-prevendita-dei-biglietti-il-dato-finale/
  15. Bloody hell, a Cremo game on and Vardy scores AND gives an assist... And i'm not watching. Shame on me. Where's the replay(s)? Here they are:
  16. Speedy and full recovery. I've always liked Keegan as a person. Never got to see him as a player. Wasn't he one of the first or maybe even the first English pro footballer to play on the Continent? Fun fact: Thanks to him, the name "Kevin" surged in popularity in Germany when he was playing for HSV.
  17. Ok, so opinions are valid – as long as it's the BBC's. We've had authoritarians for decades all across the world – and we still have. Not much uproar from the BBC with regards to dictators in other parts of the world... In countries, where the population is starving to death.
  18. I see what you're doing with that leading question. Renee Good obstructed the law, she could've stopped and handed herself in. She didn't. FAFO. It takes a master of evasion to know one, eh? If Newsom was so fantastic, do you think hundreds of thousands of people would leave his state each year? https://www.newsweek.com/california-suffers-exodus-over-200000-americans-leave-state-one-year-2004043 https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2026-01-08/californias-exodus-isnt-just-billionaires-its-regular-people-renting-u-hauls-too He's been in charge for 7 years, and California has seen no improvement. The movie industry is in tatters, too. When's the last time a ruling governor encountered a recall? And what's with the Vance thing? That's utterly strange.
  19. You're now starting to quote yourself.
  20. "Could be entirely fabricated". Just like the protests in Minneapolis then? I stated the ICE agent in question would face an internal investigation/review. How's that for "no accountability"? Most of your arguments are very strange, as they are utterly hypothetical. What if this happens, what if that occurs? Who knows? You're a master of deflection. The fact that Minnesota was already under investigation by a Democrat government just flies over your head. And it's right back to TDS. Of course you won't agree with the criticism of Newsom, because it's hard to argue with facts that run opposite your world view. Which bookies? They haven't even put a candidate or candidates forward. With the Republicans, we know it's going to be Vance. Trump won't run again. And that's a good thing.
  21. Minnesota was already under investigation by the Biden administration, so how's that? And Newsom may have the looks – given the fact he's run California into the ground, ruined tons of businesses during the pandemic whilst doing the opposite of what he was preaching, and handled the state's recent crisis very badly, he's a dud. California has seen a net exodus of people recently, taxes are crippling, infrastructure is falling apart, DEI hires ruining all levels of state and city government (see Los Angeles or San Francisco for reference). People choose to live in places such as Texas or Florida instead. But as far as the Democrats, not a lot of worthy other contenders around. Which says a lot about the Democrats.
  22. We're not even at the court stage yet. I've seen at least one other witness statement that corroborates that comment. If I'm not mistaken, you're one of the biggest proponents of semantics. "Blocking one's way" isn't the same as "happening to be in their way", and you know that. As per witness statements, she was blocking the ICE agents' path deliberately, and wouldn't move. Innocent people? She wasn't innocent, she was obstructing the law. At that point, you've become a criminal and you're facing charges. The more you resist, the worse it gets. ICE is acting on the government's behalf, their agents don't just "don a uniform" and shoot people for kicks. Otherwise, we'd have heard plenty of similar stories from all across the US. However, ICE agents have been attacked and received death threats. https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/09/22/despite-1000-increase-assaults-ice-officers-governor-newsom-signs-unconstitutional Of course, that's the US government, so I'd take that 1000 percent spike with a pinch of salt.
  23. Depends on whom you consider the instigators to be. To me, it does look like paid/orchestrated anti-ICE protests, at least in parts. And we do have a precedent in the state of Minnesota – remember the "mostly peaceful" protests following the death of George Floyd?
  24. Deary me. Tim Walz, the man who has the backbone of a fruitfly. Made a fool of himself during the elections, poor running mate to a poor Democrat candidate. With Walz in charge, Minnesota changed the state's flag to something that's not too far off Somalia's. Speaking of Somalia, see the post above. Yes, some of the fraud started before he took office in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, but it's still on him for failing to address it. It's now 7 years and counting, and he's done nothing about it. In fact, it's gotten even worse.
  25. The same reputable news agencies that only show one portion of an incident, in this case a 22-second video clip, with no other additional information (based on their own research)? That's not news, that's clickbait and rage bait. What "experts" are you referring to (in this case)? And people who can recall the circumstances to that much of a detail in general do not tend to make things up. May I remind you of your own claim here, just a few posts earlier? Regular cops can shoot you under particular circumstances (resisting arrest, etc), depending on the US state you're in (laws differ slightly). She didn't just "happen to be in their way". She blocked ICE's path: What is an alleged "legal observer" doing there? https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/renee-nicole-good-minneapolis-ice-shooting-live-updates-b2896627.html (That's a "reputable news agency") You don't obstruct law enforcement, in particular not in the US. If you do, you suffer the consequences. I'd rather the case of this mother be settled in court, but it's too late for that now.
