Were we more interested in identifying it as an opportunity to break on them by playing out around them, just put it in row Z, they don’t score from there. Just shambolic panicking, yet another sign of our confidence being completely shot to bits.

A big part of it is confidence which is totally shot (spell check) at the moment but it’s a care free sloppiness and a lazy “I’ve done my bit, I’ve moved it on” attitude, think of Drinkwaters through balls in those situations, right into the stride of the player or in front of them to run on to. We just roll it, with no pace on it behind the runner who has to stop, turn, track back to it and then somehow accelerate again in 1 stride as the opponent is now on him.

That thing where the ref points to his watch when their keeper receives “treatment”, I always see that as a reaction to our booing and heckling and perhaps our players calling it out for what it is. Basically pointing at the watch is saying “ don’t worry folks, it’ll be added on, calm down, I’m dealing with it.” Two problems with that, firstly it’s not just about time, it’s about breaking momentum which to be fair we had at that time. Secondly, they never do add it on, therefore the theatrical “look at me I’ve got a watch” shows he’s unaware of the motives behind the stoppage and is an added p***take when we all know damned well it won’t be added. It seems the refs card threshold (other than being in a blue shirt) was the grabbing of the shirt. Several times ankles were clipped by players breaking through and no card was shown, the blatant handful of shirt shows it's not a timing issue, it's a deliberate act to stop someone so no sympathy, cut it out of your game from every training session to every game at every level you play so it doesn't become a habit. I agree in part as it spoils the game seeing players held back by their shirt and the momentum of play broken up but it is laughable that fouls causing injury are let go and deemed a lesser offence. That Downes is considered to have put in a "within the rules" performance until the booking (which could have been red) is farcical whilst the same refs nit pick other stuff.

If the players think that the degree of chasing back for the 2nd goal is acceptable and he agrees by picking them again then he should go straight away, it’s about minimum standards. Similarly players who go in for all or nothing challenges when there’s no cover rather than stand ground and buy time, mainly Faes and more often it’s nothing. And players who sit gesturing at referees for a free kick that’s never coming whilst the man they should be tracking goes bombing up the pitch. Call it out, stop the rot, raise the standards.
