How the hell can they justify a £1.5m fee for a player good enough to make 100 appearances for Man City? It’s pretty much zero risk. £20k per game or £10k for loan appearances uncapped and 50% sell-on might deter them.

Going forward this is going to happen more and more often. We take kids at an early age and then the big 6 choose the best ones at 16 for a pittance. They then send them out on loan a few times and sell them for a huge profit a few years later. Man City have in excess of 200 players across all age groups but only 3 in their senior squad. They have however made £500m in sales of their academy players. The only way the other 86 clubs can protect themselves is to collectively agree not to sign players on loan from the big 6. The fee we got for Monga will be a rarity and in all honesty we might as well close the academy.

I imagine most of 720+ will have been STHs for at least 12 years but still a very significant number. Blackpool is a Saturday game and, I expect, will be one of, if not the most, in demand of the season.

But apart from them what has the academy done for us?

The problem with having ‘an excellent track record of winning promotions to higher divisions’ is that, by definition, you have to have a dreadful track record of getting relegated to lower divisions.
