Palace vs Leicester - Pre match thread (14th September 3pm)

Disagree. The disallowed goal on Saturday is a reminder how lethal he still is and how very often, he only needs one chance. Shame that he didn't get his brace against Spurs. -

Noel is a dreadful guitar player. Awful.

They realised that they were only miles apart whilst working on Smiths remasters and arranged to meet in a pub in Manchester at which point the prospect of a reunion was broached. They pledged to keep in touch, Marr went on tour with the Cribs whilst Morrissey had the imminent release of 'Years of Refusal' to tour and promote. Life happened and the silence descended again. Since then they have been practically incommunicado - the open letter to Marr from Morrissey two years ago was perhaps the Parthian shot. Of course, there may well be covert communication that we are not aware of.
-
Really? Are you sure that was official or he was being serious? It would be without the entire rhythm section though, not just the bassist. The relationship between Morrissey and Mike Joyce is irreconcilable. So essentially it would be Morrissey/Marr, which will never happen anyway.

This is a superbly written and articulated post. Not sure who this was addressed to, but I assure you that I so. In so doing, Telegram is actively promoting this abuse and whilst the leverage of state power exerted to eavesdrop on private conversations is deeply worrisome, it's equally troubling to see a private company declaring itself to be above and beyond the law. The 'end to end encryption' however that is being referred to in the popular press fundamentally misrepresents what Telegram is and how it works in practice. Hear me out here. This feature guarantees that every message will be encrypted using encryption keys that are only known to the communicating parties, and not to the service provider. That same assurance holds for anyone who might hack into the provider’s servers, and also, for better or for worse, to law enforcement agencies that serve providers with a subpoena. Telegram clearly fails to meet this pledge for a simple reason: it does not end-to-end encrypt conversations by default. If you want to use end-to-end encryption in Telegram, you must manually activate an optional end-to-end encryption feature called “Secret Chats” for every single private conversation you want to have. The feature is explicitly not turned on for the vast majority of conversations, and is only available for one-on-one conversations, and never for group chats with more than two people in them. This may seem as though I am being unnecessarily petty or facetious but the difference in adoption between default end-to-end encryption and this experience is likely very significant. The practical impact is that the vast majority of one-on-one Telegram conversations — and literally every single group chat — are probably visible on Telegram’s servers, which can see and record the content of all messages sent between users. That may or may not be a problem for every Telegram user, but it’s certainly not something you'd promote and advertise as particularly well encrypted. Many use Telegram for its social media-like features, meaning that you mainly consume content rather than producing it. But hypothetically suppose your friend, who also uses Telegram for similar reasons, notices you’re on the platform and decides he/she wants to send you a private message. Are you concerned about privacy now? And are you each going to manually turn on the “Secret Chat” feature — even though it requires four explicit clicks through hidden menus, and even though it will prevent you from communicating immediately if one of you is offline? My point is, Telegram knows its encryption is difficult to turn on, that many users don't activate this or assume that it is default. and they continue to promote their product as a secure messenger. Returning however to the question of Durov's arrest, the provision of this is of course open to abuse by those that do understand it. I concede, you have provided a strongly compelling case in defence of it. That said, where I would contend Durov does have a responsibility is to acknowledge that his platform by design actively and intentionally enables this abuse and acknowledgment of the ramifications of that and also, like any other social media CEO, in the regulation and removal of harmful or dangerous content for public consumption. "Comme on fait son lit; on se couche".

Similarly I have seen suggests this week that car manufacturers wouldn't be held liable for people speeding and drink driving - which is an appalling analogy. These platforms have the power to regulate, curtail and remove content and those that abuse them.

Sigh. Don't take it too seriously mate.

Hopefully they self-destruct before the moronic monobrow brothers get any notion of knuckle dragging themselves back into a studio. A new Oasis LP would be about as welcome as a freshly laid turd on a crown bowling green.
-
Possibly not. As you say, he toured Liam's 'Definitely Maybe' shows and seems to have made a full recovery from a horrible cancer. It's whether Noel wants Archer. Perhaps that can be their first disagreement?
-
Likely Zak Starkey since the Who (Daltrey and Townsend) have irreconcilable differences and can't even be in the same room together/don't even talk. Wait...haven't we heard that somewhere before? Turns out, the money does the talking. No reason to suppose that Andy Bell who still plays with Ride and Gem Archer won't be called up. It's not as if the average punter that would attend this farce would care - or even know the difference. At least with Bonehead and Guigsy out of the picture they'll have a bassist and a guitarist that don't look like a driving instructor and a geography supply teacher respectively.

About the only good thing that came out of Tory leadership then.

What is your line/experience? Many organisations employ agile working post covid.

I agree with him. Actually, I'm not sure that it's all that an unpopular opinion at all. Reunions seldom capture the original spirit and verve of a band. The Pistols are currently touring with Frank Carter which came about from a charity gig to save Bush Hall in Shepherd's Bush, where Steve Jones and Paul Cook grew up. They had so much fun doing it, they've added on some dates for which I have spectacularly failed to get tickets for. So not really a reunion per se - and certainly not for the money. I did manage to see the second reunion in 2007 at Brixton Academy with John which was entirely predicated on cashing in and it was ****ing great. There are always exceptions - I doubt whether Oasis would be one of them - but then I'm not the best person to ask since I always regarded their music as hackneyed crap.
-
"What gigs are you not going to?" That would be this then, on account of the fact that like the other dates, it sold out in five minutes. Also tried to get one for the old Town and Country Club in Kentish Town.

Another anecdote. We played the London Astoria several times and in those days on a stage that size you absolutely had to have a wall of speakers as opposed to amps the size of peanuts. Marshall are based in Bletchley - very close to where the enigma code was cracked by Turing et al. It was common knowledge that they are perfectly happy to loan out speakers for this purpose if the venue is suitably large because it gets their name out there (not that it wasn't synonymous enough with that sort of audience). For our final show there we sent up a couple of Sherpa and Bedford vans and had a backline like the picture above - utterly absurd. Of course, all the 4x4 cabs are dummies and empty with no speakers in them. I used to use a Marshall half stack and a full stack for bigger venues which gave a fuller sound behind me. Otherwise, it's daft, since the bass player DId into the desk anyway and the PA does all the work. We had to return them the next day (Saturday) because Bon Jovi were playing Milton Keynes Bowl and had also requested them. Actually, I remember the sound check very well. Incrementally and one by one the number fell apart, literally - I looked round and the rest of the band had all stopped playing - agog - whilst the sound man and all the roadies were gawping into the balcony where Kathy Lloyd was performing a ****ing topless photo shoot.

In another world Chillwell comes back to Leicester - and the scenes resonate across parallel universes.
