I'm still not sure the way I voted is relevant to the answer I gave to your question which I believe is no, as I have already said. To discuss what we mean by evidence, at least for my example of Brexit as proof that the electorate cannot be trusted to decide something is sufficiently evidence based, would require discussion about the claims and promises made, and the evidence behind these prior to the referendum, and is completely off topic for this thread so I'm going to leave it here.

My next door neighbour when we lived in Wigston was the owner of a very popular and successful cafe in the market. They moved the business to Wigston when the market closed as they couldn't afford the loss in trade while they waited for the refurbishment. I wonder how many other traders have left and won't be returning?

I really really don't want to come across as the forum police, but can we all please just be aware that Ian might read the forum, and also that it has been well documented that his mental health isn't always in a great place?- 38 replies

I don't disclose in my post which way I voted, so to assume the population voted in a different way from me, and therefore disagreed with me, is just that, an assumption. My point was more that many, many leave voters have since admitted that they 'didn't really know' why they voted for Brexit, and so my answer to your question: Can the British electorate be trusted to decide for themselves whether or not something is sufficiently evidence-based for them? is still no, especially given that there wasn't much evidence of the claims made by the politicians encouraging the leave vote, but people voted leave anyway.

No. See Brexit for confirmation of this.

I suppose this is what I don't understand then, what exactly are people voting for if not government policies? Whether people agree or not, and many won't, my historical votes have been based on both Conservative policy, and my local MP at the time. What other reason is there to vote? This time I'm not sure how I will decide, my only financial asset in the UK is my company pension which is protected anyway I believe, although the age I can collect my state pension might be a factor if it's mentioned, even though it's still quite a way off! Looking at the bigger picture my husband and I both have children who still live in the UK and our votes ultimately will be decided by who looks most likely to provide a better future for them, and I just can't see how the Tories think they will do that. Like @Sly, and there must be plenty others like us, we need a decent alternative, but feel like we have no option other than to vote Labour. I wonder how many people won't be able to bring themselves to break the habit of a lifetime though, and just not bother voting at all, and in whose favour that will fall?
-
Who is actually going to vote Conservative unless they've been in a coma for at least the last 5 years and suddenly wake up on 3rd July? I've never voted anything else in a GE but I wouldn't consider it now, and I can't understand why anyone would. Need to find out how we sort out our postal or online votes I guess!

We used to spend a lot of holiday time around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch with our touring caravan. https://www.hoburne.com/holiday-parks/dorset/hoburne-park/ is nice, and everything is within easy reach, it's a beautiful part of the country. We'd go crabbing at Mudeford, walking on Hengitsbury Head, down to the park in Christchurch next to the waterfront there is a paddling pool for children, the Littldown centre in Bournemouth has a nice indoor swimming pool and a ride on train behind it, the list of things to do down there is endless.

Obviously whether or not you wear your seatbelt is a personal choice, but everyone is advised to wear them while sitting in their seats. I wouldn't take my seatbelt off in a car to do something for my children and I wouldn't do it on a plane, either, unless I was going to the loo. My children always sat near enough to me on planes so that I could reach them so it wouldn't be necessary for any of us to take them off.
-
Apart from getting up out of the seat I don't understand why people wouldn't wear them, if I'm in my seat my seat belt is aways on, even if it's loosely.
-
Definitely not, but I think you've just described @Izzy
