I was not saying his death was not news. My point is that the BBC chose to lead with it, when I would argue, rather more seismic events were occurring ie Macron’s snap election, which could result in Le Pen’s power base being significantly strengthened. I assume it was because he was a BBC presenter, which if so was rather parochial of them.

The way certain news channels go way over the top when a celebrity dies. The BBC led with the death of Dr Michael Mosley. I know he was one of their presenters, but they said that he was described in some quarters as a ‘ national treasure’. I understand that he was a very nice man and of course the circumstances of his death was sad, but too be perfectly candid I had barely heard of him. To put this story above say the snap French election, or other world events is rather nonsensical.

Affordable housing in whatever form. The rental housing market has long needed reform. They have long term rents in many other countries, which gives some stability to renters. Why not here? This current mob could not even be bothered to ensure the renters reform bill went through parliament before the election. Too many of them with their noses in the trough.

Look at who else was in that leadership race, Mordant, Hunt, Braverman, Badenoch ,Tugendhat and Zaharia. None of them electable either.

I think that’s in large part down to the disparity in media coverage between the two countries. Let’s face it, there is a lot less to report on an autocracy. The same could be said for North Korea and many other countries that are similarly reviled.

I get that. I am probably at the point where I should 'confess to being Anglo American' ( on my father's side). It's been a very long time since I was there( actually just after Clinton was elected)! The older I have become the more alienated I feel from them. Trump's arrival on the political scene has certainly exacerbated that feeling. I have to disagree with you though about Saudi Arabia. I think they are an odious regime and a fair few people I know feel the same way. An amazing time to be in the US though!

Those conversations must wear you down. I don’t mind contrary views, but when rationale goes totally out of the window, I struggle. I hear what you say, but still hard to believe they could believe a professional grifter like Trump. If the boos were anything to go by, they did not sound like they believed him last week when he spoke at their convention!

That’s an interesting perception, particularly as you are living out there. I would like to ask these independents/libertarians how would they see Trump’s second presidential term of office playing out. You mentioned ‘government overreach’ but they may prefer to vote for a man who admires totalitarian leaders. It is clear from what Trump has said that he would like to make the government in his own image, that would include seeking retribution against news media that he doesn’t like, rolling back of LGBTQ and other civil rights and we know his extreme views on immigration. This would seem to be total anathema to the Libertarian party.

The jubilation is because Trump is quite unpopular outside his maga base. The fact that he is now a felon is another ‘first’ for him. Only time will tell how much this affects the election.

I suspect his conviction would turn off a lot of independent voters who were struggling to make up their minds.
