Well, he confirms it’s the opportunity to be part of the elite where Enzo feels he belongs that led him to leave rather than FFP, comms issues being ‘key factors’ etc. So contradictory, you can tell he still thinks Chelsea is a basket case of a club as he references Poch’s experience (and said as much on the Euro Leagues podcast) but his boy has decided to move there so he needs to back him up. It’s the guy who’s quoted from the article that’s made the error. Here is the exact quote from the Guardian: “Sources close to Maresca have also stressed the ­Italian has not been in a rush to leave the east Midlands club and could decide to stay if he has any late reservations about moving to west London.”

Yeah, that’s my cynical take on it. I liked Enzo but the way Romano has reported things made it seem like he had little to no loyalty to the club. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he had reservations, and the likes of Balague who he’s close to have recently highlighted what a basket case of a club Chelsea is. He must surely have some doubts, despite the money and contract length.

It’s reported Chelsea rejected him, they preferred Enzo.

They said it could take 3-4 managers for Chelsea to realise the error of their ways.

Was just listening to the Euro Leagues podcast on BBC Sport. They did a section on the Chelsea job, and they all talked about it being a basket case of a club. You can almost tell Balague trying to ward off Enzo from taking the job - he mentions him, and a few of the other candidates, and describes Chelsea as a 'messed up' club. He explains why Poch left as he didn't have control. They discuss how the owners get involved with sporting decisions and coaching appointments not being made by the manager. Let's see how it works out.

A few football hipsters have mentioned Marcelo Gallardo for PL vacancies. Don’t know much about him, probably focused on getting a big 6 club or major European club?

Yes, we are a very attractive proposition. Being manager of a PL club is massive - look how Villa managed to attract Emery, Wolves Lopetegui etc from struggling positions. Appreciate the FFP issue may deter some, but given success is staying up, it's very much a role most managers would want.

That's mainly because there are divisions within the Chelsea hierarchy. There are so many other warning signs for Enzo from this process. As we know, he's close to Balague who will have also seen how his friend Poch was treated and reported that back. But maybe Enzo feels that the financial issues at the club and the lack of comms ahead of the January transfer window lessen the risk of moving?

More noise around Enzo getting the Chelsea job:

I think we need to sell, even if Enzo stays and is able to coach him. I’ve long hoped he’d come good as he has so much potential and the attributes physically but his contract expires I think season after next and we can’t risk him running down his contract - we’ve seen what having too many players with expiring contracts did to us.

McKenna’s got interest from 3 clubs, it’s more us they’ve unsettled directly. But that’s classless Chelsea for you.

De Zerbi makes more sense. But read there is concern about De Zerbi being more of a loose cannon and difficult to manage. So another way of thinking is they get a similar style of football from Enzo but they feel they can manage him more easily as he’s less established. Another thing I read on X was it’s always been De Zerbi and the other candidates have been rumoured to make him more acceptable. Doubt that but interesting theory.

Xavi's been quoted as saying he only wants to manage Barcelona, no other management job interests him. Even if hadn't said that, I couldn't have seen him at Chelsea given one of his frustrations was lack of control on transfer policy.

Yeah, I think they will go for Potter. The club have admired him for some time and he was the planned replacement for Rodgers before it went wrong. Might be easier as we're back in the PL but think the likely points deduction will put him off. I like the idea of a younger manager with something to prove. And ideally with a similar tactical style to Enzo as we can't afford to keep swapping playing styles given FFP.
