That changes the situation to be honest, as it was clearly not a risk, not able to attack and unlikely to make it back to a position to re arm.

That is a bit my point, I don't believe for a second Iran/ China / Russia would hesitate, so if the US does, Iran has an advantage.

Not many countries put up with missiles and drones attacking them. Iran might have got away with targeting US bases only, but it seems a bit like they are either insane or they have lost command and control of their missile /drone forces and local commanders are firing at anything.

I'm not sure I get your point. It is most likely a Los Angelese class attack submarine, that is what it is for - well that and finding and sinking other submarines. Are you perhaps confusing with an SSBN which holds ballistic nuclear missiles? It seems to me if the Iranian ship was headed back to the Gulf of Oman, then taking it out is the reasonable thing to do. At least being near Sri Lanka the sailors had a chance of rescue.

I have no doubt MAGA are pissed off, and that I find good news as it will help the Dems in the next election. Iran have alienated every neighbour now, even the ones who were ok with them before. They will consider a few years of lower tourism (irrelevant to their economies in the short term) a price worth paying for a much-weakened Iran. They have all been very concerned with the drone capability of Iran, as seen in Ukraine, and the missile stockpiles are only growing. The US have suffered very low casualties so far and are in control of the skies and seas. It will take time to destroy drone and missiles capability, and once that is done Iran are set back many years. That is essentially the end game. They will do it every decade if they have to.
