deep blue Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 The toughest games for those in this relegation scrap are with those teams that are also in the scrap, our run in is not as easy as some make out. Chelsea Burnley Sunderland QPR These will be our toughest games and the 3 against the strugglers we could just as easily lose as win. Spot on. I would assess our games, from the hardest to the easiest, and the result we should aim for/be happy with, to be something like Burnley draw Sunderland draw Chelsea at least a draw Southampton at least a draw Swansea at least a draw Newcastle win No point assessing QPR because that will depend completely on the situation around both teams at the time, and the dynamic could swing either way. I just hope we pick up enough points before then for the last game not to matter.
Gerard Posted 15 April 2015 Author Posted 15 April 2015 This is true. We talk about a favourable run in on paper (which I agree), but those games against Burnley, Sunderland and QPR are six pointers. Win them and great, but lose them and the consequences are more pronounced. These teams are fighting for their lives; they will not role over. We might have been better playing the mid-table sides. I am positive but, as has been stated, there can be some funny results towards the end of the season. There are no easy games when your bottom of the league, by definition every team is better than us. Some games are easier than others. It's better to have QPR at home than Arsenal away. I think if any of our rivals lose to us they'll be relegated but the same isn't true about us. If we beat any of our rivals then surely we will finish above them? The biggest fixture left out of the bottom clubs will be Sunderland vs Leicester. At the end of the season you'll be able to look at that fixture and if it was a different result then two different teams might have been relegated.
TJB-fox Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 Don't think were in a position to laugh. Yes weve caught back up, but thats all weve done! were still bottom
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 I can see the point, we're optimistic where as fans of clubs like Hull and Sunderland are all doom and gloom, but that can all change in 2 sets of 90 minutes. fvck laughing at anyone else, most people are still laughing at us.

The last two wins mean bugger all in terms of the next games.

That completely negates the momentum we've got now, which imo is the biggest asset to any team at this stage of the season.
purpleronnie Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 Swansea at home isn't an easy fixture at all, they're 8th. A draw would be a good result Not now it wouldn't, got to win this, Swansea aren't very good away (lost more away games than sunderland and scored less goals than we have away from home). Got to be looking at 3 points to stay up.
Mark_from_USA Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 Everybody is talking about the run-in, but not the form of the respective teams. Leicester have done two things - shored up the center of the defence with Huth, and attacked much better in the past few matches. The problem with the other relegation contenders is that that have not managed to improve at both ends in this way. Sunderland's defending, for example, is woeful. Hull have been toothless in attack all season. Burnley's midfield was hurt when they lost Marney. Etc... The other thing is confidence. Leicester seem to play with no fear, at least lately. Out of the remaining 5 teams, Leicester has the best looking combination of form and remaining opportunities. They certainly have it in their hands, as Pearson says, and they are hitting form at the right time. They left themselves a lot of ground to make up, but this combination has me optimistic. In the best case the drama will be over with with one or two games to spare - its certainly possible. In the worst case we should reach the finale against QPR with an opportunity to survive with a win.

Guest ttfn Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 I think I'd rather be in their position than ours.
Gary Eatfood Posted 15 April 2015 Posted 15 April 2015 I think I'd rather be in their position than ours. True. And I bet Sunderland fans were saying the same thing about Norwich last season yet they only picked up 1 point out of the last 15.
