Bettsj2 Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 No it hasn't. It's been an incredibly good and efficient service where everyone wherever they live in the UK got their post delivered at a reasonable price. If you post a letter 1st class on the Tuesday, there was never a guarantee it would reach its destination by the next day. If you wanted to gaurantee it, all of a sudden you're paying a fiver, yet you can send a large parcel via Parcelmonkey for the same price and it will deffo get there the next say. Royal Mail service is not only unreliable but it isnt well priced either.
Bettsj2 Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 Post Office hasn't been sold off, Royal Mail has. The last government wasted 1.34 billion on a network transformation program that failed and has earmarked a further 680 million to finish off this program. Compared with? Private courier and delivery services. Go online and take your pick. All would be more reliable and cheaper.

Royal Mail service is not only unreliable but it isnt well priced either. You are talking about paying 63p to deliver something, name a rival that can guarantee a delivery anywhere in the uk next day for that. Do not believe everything you read in the Daily Mail and before it gets political Royal Mail were screwed by the Tories,Labour and Lib/Dems.
Strokes Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 No, but it is a very Tory thing to do. To aggressively privatise and then use the money to fund tax cuts and benefits for people who vote Tory. While the privatisations allow capitalists that are often linked to the Tory party to make easy money. In the case of Gordon Brown, it was a desperate attempt to balance the books that probably wouldn't have occurred if an election wasn't on the horizon. How do you feel about PFI?
katieakita Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 So Royal Mail will be privately owned that is a given. So how long will their shareholders accept the losses of running a universal service 6 days a week, just think how much can be saved by cutting Saturdays off or delivering on a Saturday for an additional fee. How many days a week will they need to deliver to the rural areas of the UK, How long will they continue to deliver post for their rivals at a loss. The last government didn't have the courage to sell off the Royal Mail group it kept the Post Office Network as it feared a public backlash. Royal Mail was vastly undervalued and forgetting the shameful profiteering from some of the City friends of the Tories 1.34 billion was allocated to a Post Office transformation program, this has failed and no doubt when Post Office management are hauled before Parliament in the coming months some will get payed off and move on and the finger of blame will be pointed at the Lib/Dems and the BIS department ran by the useless Vince Cable. A further 680 million has been promised to sort out the Post Office network and that will fail also. The Post Office also is facing a class action due to it's handling of failings in its error strewn computer system all of course to be paid for by the taxpayer. Royal Mail will make profits and service levels will drop, as for Joe Public yes they will get more choice but at a cost the head of Royal Mail already thinks £1 is a fair price for a stamp so be careful what you wish for.

Emails are the future.
Jimothy Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 Emails are the future. I've got a watch that needs repairing and has to be repaired in Maidenhead. Any suggestion on how I can get it there by email?
katieakita Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 Emails are the future. I'll wait for someone to email me a parcel then, you are probably right about letters but Royal Mail do have to subsidize their rivals post which cannot go down to well when they are fully privatised with the shareholders.
Strokes Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 I've got a watch that needs repairing and has to be repaired in Maidenhead. Any suggestion on how I can get it there by email? 3d printer Seriously though, you can send parcels through how many firms?
katieakita Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 3d printer Seriously though, you can send parcels through how many firms? You are right plenty of firms, when the last Labour government allowed competition Royal Mail were allowed to drop the 2nd delivery of the day as it was forced to deliver it's rivals post, so service levels dropped because Royal Mail lost money delivering their rivals post they were allowed by the regulator to ramp up the price of postage to the general public. Royal Mail lose around 180 million a year delivering its rivals post at a loss, how long due you think their shareholders will stand for that.

ADK Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 How do you feel about PFI? It's the same problem. Short term gain and long term loss.
Rincewind Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 People power does make a difference sometimes even if 'leftie' protesters have to be relied upon to raise awareness. http://www.irwinmitchell.com/newsandmedia/2015/march/government-backs-down-on-disabled-students-allowance-changes-after-legal-action#.VQH_p6q0n-c.facebook Without somebody objecting there would no public knowledge regarding this.

Although not all will agree. Decent article up to the point where it starts the usual bollocks about taking from the poor and handing to the rich. If these stats are correct, the government is getting it wrong. The whole point of the welfare state is to help people like this in my view.
Guest MattP Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Does the Guardian just trawl the country looking for people with individual hardships now? The Tories told people about these cuts before the election and people voted for them, get over it. Of course times are going to be hard, we're a country with a 1.5trillion debt and are still borrowing 90 billion a year to get by, people don't actually think any government is going to start increasing spending do they?
Finnegan Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 And if we had a Labour government, the right wing rags would be touring the country finding benefit fraud, local government miss-spending and migrant criminals. It's what they do.
Rincewind Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 They are getting it wrong inasfar as they have gone OTT. I have always been skeptical about the the number of skiver claims but we have seen the words spoken first from govt ministers then papers then on here. Words and how they are used are very powerful in the right circumstances.
Rincewind Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 And if we had a Labour government, the right wing rags would be touring the country finding benefit fraud, local government miss-spending and migrant criminals. It's what they do. They do now.
Finnegan Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 They do now. Well, yes. But the Guardian would be bemoaning social injustice if we had a Labour government as well.
Rincewind Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Well, yes. But the Guardian would be bemoaning social injustice if we had a Labour government as well. Yes they would and if I thought the govt was being unfair I would be having a go at them as much if not more than I do now. Although some would not believe that I would. You either sit in shit or swim in piss. Take your choice.

Rincewind Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Swim in piss - there's something seriously wrong with you if you choose the other. It was not meant to be an invite or a poll.
