Goal difference instead of points

I personally prefer the system they have in Spain and a few other countries. Head to head over goal difference.

A rugby bonus point system might be good.

4 points for a win.

2 points for a draw.

+1 point for scoring 3 goals or more.

+1 point for losing by 1 goal but scoring eg 2-1, 3-2, 4-3.

We'd have got 2 points for losing to Spurs!

As much as that would have been good for us, I think rewarding teams that lose is ridiculous!

keep it the same as it is now

3 points for a win 0 points for a loss.

1 point for each team for a draw but then have a penalty shootout where the winning gets a bonus point, so a draw and lose shootout is 1 point and a draw and win shootout is 2 points.

hopefully this would encouage idiots not to leave before thefinal whistle.

Good arguement re : your last point but that points system would encourage far too many teams playing for a draw when the reward is potentially 2pts instead of 1pt.

Was about to say the same thing, a penalty shoot out is a lottery and if Watford park the bus and scrape a 0-0 with Arsenal why should they get a chance to earn a bonus point?

If it was like ice hockey with overtime, then it would add interest and value for money and discourage playing for a draw.

3 points for a win, 0 for a defeat in 90 minutes.

a period of over time if it is a draw (could be 10-30 minutes, golden goal, not really sure yet, I'm not really a fan of this idea), 2 points for winner in over time, 0 points if you lose in over time, 1 point each if it is drawn after over time. The benefit would be more football, more excitement, and more crucial goals.

0 points for an overtime defeat would mean that teams would rather lose in regular time than play for longer and still get no points. Earning a point for reaching 90 minutes all square could lead to farcical over times where the weaker team just gives up content with a point away at Chelsea who then score 5 or 6, or if it is golden goal score within 5 seconds as the other side can't be arsed have their point and just want to go home.

But I don't really see the need for any of this, 3,1,0 is simple fair and effective and as much as it can be dull to watch defensive play is just as important as attacking and a team that is disciplined and organised enough to keep a clean sheet should get a reward. What should be discouraged is this anti football, play acting, feigning injury, slowing down play, arguing with refs, simulation, playing it into the corner and keeping it there. Refs need the tools and the backing from the FA to be able to stamp it out when it is clearly going on. The 6 second rule was a step in the right direction but it was never enforced. There should also be FA reviews of games and fines for clubs that use these tactics. I don't mean parking the bus I mean deliberate tactics of spoiling the game as a sporting contest.
