Frank to be Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 What would football be like if league positions were determined by goal difference?
yorkie1999 Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 We'd still be in 14th. Sky sports, click on gd to re-sort.
Webbo Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 It would lead to negative football with teams not want to concede whereas 3 points for a win makes it more valuable to win.
foxfanazer Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 It would lead to negative football with teams not want to concede whereas 3 points for a win makes it more valuable to win.Yeah exactly this
Alf Bentley Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 It would lead to negative football with teams not want to concede whereas 3 points for a win makes it more valuable to win. Not if you allocated 4 goals per goal scored and deducted just 1 goal per goal conceded....
yorkie1999 Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Chelsea would win everything Man city would have won the prem.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 What about keeping it as it is now, but awarding a bonus point if you score say 3 or above in a match. That'd be more interesting.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Sky pushing to award half a point for a score draw or something similar. There's room for improvement in the system- not that it's awful as it is- and if it encourages positive, attacking footbal (like a BP for a certain number of goals as you say)l then I'm all ears
Guest Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 I'm very wary of changing the points system. One of the things that makes football so great is the general simplicity of it. As it stands: winning is good, not losing merits some minor reward, and flat out losing gets you nowhere. Don't mind the idea of ranking by goal difference. But if we get into half points and bonus points for this and that, it will become a horrible mess.
Hollism Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 I'm not saying I support the idea of half-points or something similar. I'm just saying the current system isn't perfect, and any proposal to improve it shouldn't be instantly dismissed. There's no rush though, and it works okay for now.
Jordan Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 It would make Nigerian football even more amazing http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/jul/09/nigeria-scandalous-scorelines
Lionator Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 A rugby bonus point system might be good. 4 points for a win. 2 points for a draw. +1 point for scoring 3 goals or more. +1 point for losing by 1 goal but scoring eg 2-1, 3-2, 4-3.
the zorro Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 We'd still be in 14th. Sky sports, click on gd to re-sort. No. We'd be 13th.
Hollism Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Maybe not if the other teams were pushing for a third for a BP.
Benguin Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 I think a draw should become more of a negative thing. Win = 3 points Draw = 0 points Lose = -1 point
the zorro Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 I think a draw should become more of a negative thing. Win = 3 points Draw = 0 points Lose = -1 point As much as the American format was criticised a few years ago, when the MLS was in its infancy, I quite like 3 points for a win, 0 for a defeat, and if the game ends in a draw, you go straight to penalties to earn 1 or 2 points. Lose the shoot out and you get 0. Would certainly add drama. Some might say that it'd make teams play for a draw and practice penalties, but on the other hand, you have to be positive because penalties are such a lottery. The standard of penalties in the domestic game has got a lot better, demonstrated by record lengths of shoot outs recently. Only an idea, it'd never happen, so don't shoot me down!
Captain... Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Nah, people would park the bus against Chelsea or Man City even when only losing by 1 the reward for equalising would not be worth the risk of conceding It also means that a team not turning up, like Sunderland vs Southsmpton would massively distort the league, when it was Sunderland that were shit rather than Southampton being amazing and they would not deserve 9 times the reward compared to a team earning a hard fought 1-0 win against Chelsea (for example).
Captain... Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 I'm not saying I support the idea of half-points or something similar. I'm just saying the current system isn't perfect, and any proposal to improve it shouldn't be instantly dismissed. There's no rush though, and it works okay for now. In what way is it flawed? Can you give me one example of a team that have been unfairly treated by the points system? Football is about winning games, the point system rewards that and goal difference separates the teams on equal points. If you said that teams on the same number of points should be separated by the results against each other then fair enough I can see the logic in that, but bonus points and over valuing goal difference nah. If we fined teams for negative play, anti football tactics and time wasting before the 90th minute I would be ok with that as long as the fines went to financially compensate fans that go to games with the aim to keep ticket prices down. I was disgusted by West Brom at the KP and thought there should be some way to punish them for their performance, but they won and deserve the points.
Beliall Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 3points for a home win 5 points away win 2 points score draw 1 point no score draw bonus point for over 3 goals scored ?
foxes_rule1978 Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 3points for a home win 5 points away win 2 points score draw 1 point no score draw bonus point for over 3 goals scored ? -1 point for no score draw and would be perfect
fuchsntf Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Leave it as it is. This modern system did the trick for me. 3-1-0 works. A team might play an odd game for the draw, to stabalise a poor run, but cant plan a run of draws, or they fall by the wayside. Burnley, end short, but they still knew they had to try and win. Foxes great escape, and last seasons Sunderland prison break, proved the system works, teams have to go for it, and look for plans A, B, C, eventually.
