davieG Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 The UK population is to increase beyond 70 million in the next 12 years, official projections suggest. The Office for National Statistics said the population was expected to increase by 4.4 million in the next decade, before reaching 70 million in 2027. That increase is roughly the size of the Irish Republic. The statistics predict an ageing population, with some 29.5% of people aged over 60 by 2039 - up from 23.2% this year. By then, more than one in 12 UK people are expected to be aged 80 or over. The latest official figures say there are just under 64.6 million people in the UK. The population is projected to grow by 9.7 million over the next 25 years, to 74.3 million. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said its latest projections assume that more people will come to live in the UK than emigrate, accounting for about half of the projected population increase. The remainder is attributed to births outnumbering deaths. Projections were also revised upwards in the latest figures. The population estimate for 2024 is now 249,000 more than the previous projection in 2012. Population growth As of June 2014 there were 64,596,800 People living in the UK 491,100 more than the previous year 259,700 added from net migration 226,200 from natural growth 25% of all births in 2013 were to mothers born outside the UK ONS GETTY The overall trend is "very similar" to past figures, said Prof Christian Dustmann, director of the Centre for Research and Analysis on Migration at University College London. "What we see in many European countries, in particular the larger economies such as Germany, is actually a trend in the opposite direction," he said. "Population is decreasing in Germany, as it is in Italy or Spain. That puts these countries in a very difficult situation. "[When] populations are decreasing, you're dealing with a shrinking working-age population, which basically has to be confronted with an increasing ageing population which is not productive any more." In the UK, where migration is contributing to population growth, the challenge was to ensure immigrants paid more in taxes than they cost in public services, he said. "An increase in population means a larger economic base - part of the GDP growth we have seen is due to immigration," he said. Prof Dustmann said one reason the ONS produces these figures is to prepare policy makers for "future demands" - and he said they should "clearly be prepared to expand public services".

RedSoxUK Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 Prof Christian Dustmann, sounds like he's talking rubbish. He's pretty accurate, just not entirely economically understanding of low population growth. Germany has had one of the lowest fertility rates for decades but has still been able to top the European economy. Japan has very little migration and a similiar low birth rate, excelling their own now westernised economy. The problem Germany and Japan face is an aging population, it has a bigger impact on manpower than anything. The solution you would assume they plan up is... start having babies... But with a shift in attitudes to female career paths, and having less time / money for children. It's become the norm in western countries. Germany intend to solve this now by their import of 1.6 million migrants who will bring over their familes bringing that figure up to 4m+ over the next decade, and those migrant / refugees reproduce more generally with tradition. Sweden's solution was mass immigration, not controlled immigration - their population and fertility rate has gone up now, as they had one of the worst aging populations in the world. Germany will be fine.

I came ,I saw, I civilized,I conquered and I upped the birthrate, quicker than you could shout 'penalty shootout'
fuchsntf Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 I said he, as in Ken!!! A question, didnt you post you were in Chicago, for awhile. Did you like it, did you find the right Pizza..???
AyewJoking Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 I had a vasectomy when I was about 28 so a long time since I made any meaningful contribution. what percentage of the population can be classed as meaningful contributions
Dr The Singh Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 A question, didnt you post you were in Chicago, for awhile. Did you like it, did you find the right Pizza..??? I was only there for a day, I enjoyed it, it was lively and pleasant. I tried a mega deep dish which tasted more like aa sandwich as there were probably too much toppings, I asked for double dough, which I think they just gave a double crust pizza, but it was delightful though. After that I went to memphis

The ami deep dish, can be filling, if one isnt carefull, plus big danger when asking for extra toppings, in ami-land, extras are often a meal on their own. If you get there again, ask about the Devon area, some great Indian-Asian restaurants, with some (not all) great buffets, Meat or Veggy only. NAVY pier, has some great fietes and festivals, and at one time a damn good Bubba gumps ( from forest Gump), Shrimp and fish restaurant. Where you off to next.. ???

MPH Posted 29 October 2015 Posted 29 October 2015 And before anyone moans about immigrants, there are just as many British people living abroad ( myself included) as there are of other nationals living in Britain.. If they all left then we'd all have to come back. so pipe down.

I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing but there is a difference.

My point was that if all those immigrants had to go home, then so would all the British living abroad so there wouldn't be any change in the amount of people living in Britain!

I don't think anyone is suggesting we should throw people out, just slow down the amount of people coming in.
