Voll Blau Posted 12 February 2016 Posted 12 February 2016 Expecting lots of "Good, horrible little club." type comments as per on this, but to me it's nothing short of a disgrace their community arm is being sold down the river by their local council. Petition link below: I’ve supported Millwall man and boy for 45 years. The Club has been my family. Like all families, we've had highs and lows but one thing has stayed constant - the Club has been proud to be part of the community. From establishing our award-winning Millwall Community Scheme Trust which has helped thousands of local kids through social inclusion programmes to being part of the campaign to Save Lewisham A&E, the Club has always shown responsibility to its fans and neighbours. That’s why fans are appalled that three important areas of land currently leased to the Club and the Community Scheme – including the Lions Centre which houses our community initiatives and the car park – are being by sold by Lewisham Council to a property developer. This is in spite of Millwall submitting ambitious and viable development plans that would not only guarantee the future of our Community Scheme but also the long-term financial security of the Club. Lewisham Council didn’t even consider them or allow us to bid for the land. We urge Lewisham Council to stop this sale, get back round the table to consider Millwall’s plans and let the Club continue to play a major role in serving the community as well as participating in the development of the Surrey Canal Triangle. Millwall and Lewisham Council worked together with the community to stop Lewisham A&E closing. So let’s work together again to put the people first, not a property developer. Please sign this petition and let’s Defend Our Den. https://www.change.org/p/lewisham-council-defend-our-den-stop-millwall-land-sale-to-property-developers?recruiter=21366745&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=share_twitter_responsive

GaelicFox Posted 12 February 2016 Posted 12 February 2016 Lovely club and decent people running it but awful fecking area and scum around it ! They 100% need an A+E so I would have signed for that ! But they need new residents and people in the area so let's hope the council can sell off that land and try and improve the local community !

No. Gentrification is awful for the community, it'll just become become another shitty, soulless inner-London commuter area. It's the club-run initiatives that they're set to lose that will improve it. Not trying to be a people's hero or anything, and I don't want to turn this into a left/right debate as I'm pretty moderate. Signed. The club is massive to the community and the community's massive for the club.

Are you constantly on the wind-up? You don't improve a poverty-stricken local community by taking away vital playing facilities for the kids who may well end up like the "scum" you describe if this goes through...

You don't improve a poverty-stricken local community by taking away vital playing facilities for the kids who may well end up like the "scum" you describe if this goes through... Vital playing facilities can be moved to brown field and if you look at the planning application you will see the council is looking at that issue. This area like shoreditch 10-15 years ago is in desperate need of new and modern housing, young vibrant professionals. The council need funds to pay for improvements to education and healthcare because our Tory government is screwing them over . The council has a serious deficit as well ! Football clubs have a very poor history of improving the social fabric of areas they are located in , unless they have accompanying redevelopment it just keeps an area held down. Goodson park , anfield , West Ham , Spurs the list goes on and on of Mega rich organisations that have for over 100 years done little to improve the social fabric of the area they inhabit Wind-up ? Seems to be having an informed opinion in these parts and voicing it is winding folk up

In an industrial area surrounded by Peckham, Bemondsey & New Cross. You'd need to demolish & start again to improve that area.

AyewJoking Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 cant they just build a new lions centre (and car park) on all the empty seats at wham's new stadium?
Voll Blau Posted 18 February 2016 Author Posted 18 February 2016 8 February ~ Lewisham Council has deferred a decision which could jeopardise Millwall’s future after a petition against the move gained 15,000 signatures. Land around The Den, which is currently leased to the club and includes their car park, cafe and the Lions Centre – which plays an important role in the community – was due to be sold off to property developers. However, the compulsory purchased order has now been put on hold after the Defend Our Den campaign, giving Millwall time to talk to Renewal, the property developers, and come to an agreement. Millwall themselves attempted to buy the land in 2013, after submitting plans for a scheme involving 400 homes and new facilities for the Millwall Community Trust. Renewal say their proposals will create 2,000 jobs, 2,400 homes and a new overground station. After the deferral, Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler said: “I would like to thank the fans for the huge amount of support they’ve given us – and I would urge them to keep signing the petition.” You can read and sign the petition here. http://www.wsc.co.uk/wsc-daily/1207-february-2016/13100-millwall-land-decision-deferred-after-fan-campaign Nice bit of fan power in action.

People from all social classes wouldn't be able to improve when the working class are thrown out because the cost of living goes up by double. Foreign investors are willing to throw whatever money they can at these projects to create some superficial urban hipster farm that makes them plenty of £££

C-man Posted 20 February 2016 Posted 20 February 2016 Love how that article says 'there's no excuse' as if the Police should be respected 100% of the time no matter what their actions. No idea of the circumstances but I imagine they won't be innocent in this either.
