Sampson Posted 4 May 2017 Posted 4 May 2017 I disagree that "Walsh will always be a legend". Other players will be remembered far more in the future when most who saw him play are no longer alive. He's still in recent enough memory to be fresh but I think his records or career song stand out on the face of it as others do. I'm sure people said the same about players like Sep Smith when they retired - but these players never get remembered as well as the players with the great achievements. He's not our top scorer or top appearance maker, his biggest moment was in the Second Division. We've won the league since then. Whether we like it or not, history will overshadow his achievements. A lot of people who remember him will love Walsh, but in 30 years time he'll just be an occasionally mentioned name like Sep Smith or Dave Gibson or Keith Weller. Players like Jamie Vardy will almost certainly be remembered more 40 or 50 years after retirement - at which point a statue will still be around. Let's face it - Walsh was a great player for us in the Second Division, had one disastrous season for us in the top flight (94-95) and one great season for us in the top flight (96-97) before being phased out in favour of players like Elliott, Taggart, Prior and Sinclair. I think statues should be there forever - for players who will still be remembered by the majority of fans after everyone who saw him is long dead, I just don't see Walsh being a player like that at all, his records or achievements just won't see him stand out when the emotion of his goals with (and players in the future could easily take over his record and commitment etc. - we've already had 3 or 4 better defenders than him since 1997/98 when he began to decline).
Wymsey Posted 4 May 2017 Posted 4 May 2017 Should be Alan Birchenall, an undoubted club legend both on and off the pitch for decades, holding the PL trophy imo.

Would be nice of there was some sort of reminder of what was once there. Really want the club to buy/council to use that and make it a football themed area with bars and food for pre (and post) match. Would be busy and think you could then use it to show the club's history. Never happen though

theessexfox Posted 4 May 2017 Posted 4 May 2017 Arsenal's ground is how to treasure your history, albeit they have a fair bit more to go off.

This football club is a big part of the city and we should celebrate that.

The people/company that own the piece of land there aren't willing to alter anything hence it looks like it has been disused for years.
