Just be careful about the price of everything essential hitting the roof due to massive economic upheaval and hundreds of millions of migrants needing to move or die (which is the major contributing factor to the aforementioned economic upheaval).

Yes, but with respect, that wasn't the question I asked. I asked if the current temperature matched historical averages, to which you responded in the affirmative. Thanks to the information provided above, we can see the June average maximum temperature historically ranges from around 18-20 degrees C tops, which today of course rather exceeds. As did yesterday, and apparently so will the next week.

 

Of course, you've clarified things a bit with this recent comment, so fair enough.

Certainly they do. However, I'm pretty sure that what they don't wish for, travelling or otherwise is consistently increasingly high temperatures and sunshine that then result in rather unpleasant consequences all round.

 

My initial point was to once again raise the idea that there might just be a little systemic global problem regarding such things, and so folks might be motivated to actually do something about it for the sake of themselves and future generations, rather than luxuriating in denial and/or just writing it off as "summer".

I think everyone is aware of the drum you keep banging, but what exactly can we do about it apart from pay the net zero tax so that people such as yourselves can come up with a solution. We can't just stop living,  we've got hardly any industry, cars that emit next to nothing in co2's, wind power, solar power, we don't use hairspray anymore and we eat as many cows as possible. I think the problems are being created/carried on in other parts of the world that ain't ever gonna listen.

I've talked about this before here too - I get it, it's a problem that many people think is "too big", and with good reason.

 

I'll say again that I'm certainly not advocating for regression in either tech or living standards (quite the opposite) and while it may seem there's nothing more that can be done, it's always possible to, say, lobby a local MP to raise the issue in Parliament and give them the impression that their constituents are ready for continuing change in the way we source energy, and for those same MP's to then use what political power they have to get other countries to do the same.

Once we can get the majority of cars on the road globally to being electric, and then also airplanes too, we'll be in a much better place. 

 

Hopefully big industry around the world should be much greener by then too. I'd say a good 30-50 years for all of the above. Fingers crossed for fusion in that time scale too.

Transportation is a big piece of the puzzle, but power generation is the real problem. Biggest contributor by far and things just aren't moving fast enough there.

 

30-50 years would be a reasonable timeframe, but that's still likely going to result in an average temperature increase of over 2 degrees C, with all the consequences that will entail. We really need to do it sooner.

You are conflating climate change with ozone depletion. 

 

People do -  but since CFCs have been banned for consumer products by the Montreal Protocol  in 1987, aerosol spray manufacturers had to devise other propellants. Commonly they use gases like propane and butane. These gases don't damage the ozone layer like CFCs do, but they have their own sets of concerns.

 

And actually, many of today’s propellants contain hydrocarbons or other compressed gasses that still contribute to global warming. quick burst of deodorant might feel harmless, - it largely is - but aerosol can pollution still contributes to your carbon footprint, and the effects are cumulative.

Well you are comparing apples and oranges.

You are correct in stating June averages 18-20c . Today is one day, you would need to wait until June is over to compare June 2023 with historical averages. 

 

Catastrophizing every individual event is neither helpful or healthy. Resulting in the message you are trying to send getting lost in the continual noise of non-events.

Personally I am pretty damn confident that the current high temperatures (especially because those temperatures are not from a single day, but from a week or more forecast) have everything to do with a consistent global average temperature increase that will be catastrophic within the next few decades (indirectly for the UK, directly for other places), but of course we'll only know that for sure when the month is over.

 

I'd agree that going on about the consequences alone isn't helpful or healthy as it implies powerlessness, but then I've not done that either.

Yeah, having things swivel from too cold to too hot on a penny isn't the best combo if you're not ready as a country for it.

 

I mean, it kinds happens that way over here, but they're used to tropical climates. Of course, the extremes of temperature keep getting pushed over here too.

Good for you, given the way things are going it's a wise investment and I'm a strong advocate for better living through technology.

 

I would however offer a hint that you might want to pair that with a little bit of thought about the energy generation that powers that aircon unit in the name of future self-interest, because those in a couple decades in (possibly) vastly reduced circumstances might not have such a kind and understanding disposition towards those they think didn't help with the problem and so might be rather indiscriminate. :(

 

Edit: Here's hoping it doesn't come to that, though.
