I think the chances of us running into "intelligent" life are very slim. I love all the Drake Equation and Fermi Paradox stuff, but the "Great Filter" also tells us that although there are billions (probably) of potential life supporting planets, the chances of species being able to develop to a point where interstellar travel is possible are very very small.

I think the Rare Earth Hypothesis is a more accurate view

*REH detail*

1

The REH is interesting, but it is an extension of the Drake Equation stipulating just how big the odds are of intelligent life developing on a planet, and as such is covered by it, as well as including elements of the Fermi Paradox.

I would have to do some more reading and take some time to launch a more detailed rebuttal, but for now I'd just say that while all those elements in the REH are broadly true, the sheer number of planetary systems out there (a recent find and something that article needs to be updated with as such systems are much more common than first suspected) means that the odds are adjusted somewhat.

Of course, I would also posit that the conditions and odds for finding complex and communicable life are far more stringent than for simple life, given the array of additional hoops life has to jump through to get from simple single-cells to something capable of communicating or travelling at near to light-speed.

Saw this one earlier last week...

Can't say I believe this stuff lol

That's been released by the US government or from that program they just recently told the public about... clearly a UFO in the video even the pilots are at odds to what it is.

must be preparing the public for the inventible, there is life elsewhere and its flying around as we speak

if life is that rare in the universe, how did Dinosaurs and humans end up on the same planet, surely that would be a miracle

I don't know much about our evolution as I'm not clever when it comes to science but I do find it baffling that millions of years ago there were dinosaurs and now we're the apex predator. I always consider the possibility that the life we evolved from came on the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. But then I know its considered fact now that birds are descendant from dinosaurs so probably not.

I'm about as skeptical as they come with cover ups and conspiracy theories but that doesn't mean I don't like to read about them. In fact I find myself obsessing about some and even when they're dark or horrible I often can't help wanting them to be true.

My favorite one to read about is area 51. When it comes down to it, I think at most there are some cool pieces of technology there out with the scope of anything abnormal or sinister. That said I don't see any reason for the base to be as secretive as it is if it just a military base to test advanced aircraft and warfare. I don't buy into the national security stuff unless they are testing or hiding more.

I listened to this recently and enjoyed it, as they delve into it all but with skeptical eyes. https://thoseconspiracyguys.com/area-51/

What do others think, about any conspiracies not just area 51?

I had a friend who was heavily into this stuff & JFK murders 25 yrs ago. I never paid much attention until i became aquainted with the work of John Pilger. His work made me realise that governments are pretty much all corrupt and full of liars. Who knows what's really true, but there's so much info out there now on things like Operation highjump, MK Ultra, Montauk Project, Agenda 21, Dulce base, Operation paperclip, etc.

If you're into UFO's you may be interested in the Vril and Haunebru Machines, that the Nazi's were apparently developing, as well as the Die Glocke.

The key element here is time.

Life has existed in one form or another on Earth for over three and a half billion years, and over two billion of those were just single-celled stuff. It's difficult to comprehend that kind of length of time when a single human life is roughly 1/30000000 of that and all of recorded civilisation is 1/300000 of it...but over a long enough timescale, chance ensures anything can happen - like dinosaurs gradually evolving into modern birds and mammals branching off into primates (and eventually humans).

Yes. there's plenty who don't agree with REH, but it interests me to think how unlikely it is be an intelligent species to evolve to our level. I suppose there could be other civilizations out there but they may just be spread too far apart, or seperated by millions of years.

It is a sobering thought to think that probes like Voyager may still be flying through space for thousands, maybe even millions of years after humans have vanished!

I think the our ultimate ancestors were small rodent like creatures who probably survived the extinction event which killed the dinosaurs.

"Evolution" by Stephen Baxter is a brilliant sci fi read - in which time and evolution is the main protaganist of the story, following one line of DNA from creatures who hunted amongst the giant dinosaurs, all the way through human history and civilization and into the far far future!
