Was back on the booze this weekend after having most of Jan off it. I tried the Monro and Bridewell before the Everton game. Beer selection in the Monro was good, but I just didn't like the feel of the place inside. They've gone for some kind of rustic half finished decor, which makes the place feel more like a themed bar than pub. The Bridewell was good, it's an old police station which has been turned into a pub. Always a good atmosphere in there and the landlord behind the bar is a bit of a local legend- I was on the Kirkstall bitter. Generally love Liverpool for boozing (pubs and bars), and I think it's got even better since I was there for uni, with some good renovations and new additions.

Was in the Fox Cub on Sunday sampling some new beers which were as good as ever.

Had an enforced 20 day break between sat 11 - Fri 31, longest period since I was 15 I think. Couple of Guinness over the weekend watching that contrived rugby tournament listening to rugby people really making an effort to congratulate the winning team and reiterate to anyone in earshot how different rugby is to football.

I have shifted to only having more than 3 or 4 pints when in London or Leicester.

The step from five pints to six is the most hangover consequential I think.

Had five fairly late on Saturday and was a touch groggy, anymore would have tipped over the edge.

Yesterday I was given a bottle of Heineken as a replacement for the bottle of Peroni I ordered. I have never actually tasted dirty dish water but suspect that it is nicer.

That is hugely ironic given you initially ordered a bottle of Peroni. Really nasty stuff IMO, I don't know how they took over the corporate/'I'm trying to look middle class' social market.

Of the imported Italian lagers I can only stomach Moretti.

Poretti > Moretti > Peroni

I'm clearly alone here but I like Peroni. My options are Peroni, Heineken or Becks. I'll be going for Becks today if there isn't Peroni. I'm on holiday, so drinking on a Monday lunch is allowed

*It's actually not, Poretti is indeed the best

Apparently the Pinsent owner has bought the fishing shop in Mountsorrel and is going to move there

This should be good news in theory, it’s fantastic but very cramped in there. Hopefully with better opening hours too as it’s less residential.

Peroni on draught is miles better than the bottles IMO. Nether are top tier though.

The only draught we've got is also Heineken. Fortunately, someone had been to the stores or some bottles were loaded at the last port and the Peroni was back in stock :D

What do you mean. Are there no pubs around you? Are you in prison?

No, I'm on a ship, somewhere approaching Amsterdam.

Had a weekend in Manchester with the family so not particularly boozy but my word it has some belting pubs.

Which pubs did you go to? I live in Manchester and often think we don't have many great pubs in the city centre compared to Liverpool and Sheffield which are smaller cities. Interested to hear a visitor's perspective though.

I only had a fleeting visit into Marble Arch.

But I rate Marble Arch, Britons Protection, Peveril, The Angel, Castle Hotel, The Temple, Big Hands and Flok.

All good choices. Marble Arch is great. Britons Protection has potential to be great but is poorly ran. Pev, Angel and the Castle are all decent. Port Street Tavern is worth a trip, they have a huge selection of beers.

Just feel for the size of the city it's not got as many truly great pubs in the centre as it should do. I can think of 25-30 genuinely excellent city centre pubs in Liverpool, but in Manchester it's maybe 7 or 8.

Liverpool's pubs seem far less revered too, I probably see about 5 sodding photos of the Peveril every week. The Philharmonic is just as photogenic.

The Phil has the greatest pub toilets in the world. They are a work of art. Almost feel bad for urinating in them.
