Why no woman's football team supported by the club?

Personally wouldn’t watch a women’s football match if it was being played in my back garden.

Also baffled why the BBC try to force it in to the mainstream at every opportunity.

Each to their own though.

Well it could be something to do with the fact that roughly half the population of this country are women. Also Sky has ensured that football is largely the domain of those who can afford to pay and the BBC is effectively priced out of mainstream sport so show "lesser" sports. Personally I think the BBC increasing coverage of so-called minority sports is is a very positive thing. Not everyone wants to play/watch football and the more we can increase participation in sport at grass roots levels the better for society as a whole.

Back in the 1920s women's football in the Uk was incredibly popular and attendances were often higher than for men's matches, incuding 55000 who saw a game at Everton. Then men (the FA) decided that women shouldn't play the game and women's football was consigned to the dustbin of history. If it had been allowed to continue and develop as it was doing in the 20s then maybe it would have been on a par or perhaps even surpassed the men's game in popularity in this country. Who knows?

As you say each to their own but if you haven't been then why not at least try and give it a go it may be better than you think. Some of the quality is fast improving.

I've not watched any for quite a while, is anyone producing a decent keeper yet? You could see the quality getting better outfield, but the keepers always looked absolutely shocking when I watched.

No.. that is DEFINITELY the biggest issue in the game.. even in the match today, keepers were poor

Well reasoned and explained reply.

In terms of giving it a try, like I said I couldn’t think of anything worse. Maybe I’m a dinosaur (aged 40) but watching women’s football would be below shopping with the mrs on my list of things to do.

In comparison I have travelled the world watching England and in many cases in the early years without a ticket, so ultimately taking time off and paying to be in a city/country purely where England were playing with no chance of a ticket.

Like I said, and it wasn’t just for affect, I wouldn’t watch a woman’s game if it was free/in my own garden. Even free food and beer wouldn’t tempt to a stadium.

But why? It really confuses me when people are so against it but they've never seen it?

Hope Solo was really decent for the US team but then she went a bit mental and beat up some people and was dropped.

Also when I moved to the US I started playing football in the local co-ed league and some of the girls in Div 1 (top league) who played college level were pretty darn good. I played uni first team at Sheffield Uni so not a bad standard, and there were some girls who I’ve played against here that would have got close for speed and skill - they were tough too. We also had a guy who played in goal for us who was pretty good (well, decent Sunday league!) but when he was at high school, their first choice gk was a girl who went on to play Div A (the top college level) at uni.

Amazing what good coaching from an early age can achieve, and it shows the gender gap is certainly closing for the non-elite levels. There was also a good article in the Guardian Sport section recently (see link below) about Arsenal integrating top girls into their youth teams... clearly at U12 etc girls have physical parity so it’s not a question of physique, but pure ability and application.

Football is Football?

I just think it's the standard.

I suspect most senior league teams would give the women's international team an absolute pounding (double entendre intended)....so ultimately, watching women's football is seeing parks level football televised. No thanks.

Have you seen Alan Birchenall out your way in the past?

Believe he still lives in the woodies.
