fuchsntf Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 I have said it all through my years......you can't compare.. Messi/Ronaldo forwards, midfielders ,loved by the gallery, taking on the obvious job and automatic plaudits,a few goals and a twist gets you started.. But like @foxes92 points out..there are other areas that get easy forgotten...Beckenbauer,Maldini,kooman other great CBs,and a cackle of FBs. Even now there are top players that can cover the whole Bline... I like Messi,he belongs like Ronaldo in that hall of fame, All time greats...but let schoolboys around the world discuss such eye-spotting follies!!! There has been/is too many high class quality footballing greats,I don't believe you can seperate them... Strength, weaknesses they all had, with their great achievements, have also goals not reached... Messi basically a one club man, where others like Ronaldlo,Puskas, Cryuf, spread their wings and created history at 2-4 clubs...

I've always liked/rated Van Dijk and I think he's a great defender, definitely been an excellent signing for Liverpool, but some of the way the pundits talk you're right; it's as if he's the greatest ever. I don't think pundits watch anything outside of the PL, they talk the same shit, we've been hearing De Gae is the best goalkeeper in the World for the last 5 years.

There is no doubt he is an excellent, top class player but the bloke would get praised for breathing. Pique was a lot better than him the other night.

They dont watch anything outside of the top 6. I'm convinced they just get told what to say on everyone else
RonnieTodger Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 Surely. there are genuinely people that think he's not the greatest until he plays in the PL, despite tearing every English team a new arsehole when they meet in Europe. Anyone suggesting Maradona was better is surely clinging onto the old days being better.
oxford blue Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6988751/Lionel-Messis-10-free-kicks-Liverpool-goal.html His best free kicks. Two of the kicks againsr Espanyol are special as is the one v Deportivo. I think the L'pool goal is still the best, given the swerve and pace
leicsmac Posted 4 May 2019 Posted 4 May 2019 For a club? Probably - the record speaks for itself, particularly in the modern era (along with C.Ronaldos, too). Internationally, where it matters more (and I'm admitting to some bias here because I think being a key part of winning a single World Cup to be a far greater prize than five Champions League titles)? Not even close. As other folks have said though, comparing eras is most often a fools errand.
