st albans fox Posted 1 May 2019 Posted 1 May 2019 Tough to call ..... when pele and best played on mudbaths they were kicked to f#ck. messi wouldn’t be able to do what he does now back then. Maradonna similar though not quite as bad. You can’t compare players across epochs. Messi is clearly the best of the modern era going back to the eighties.....

Collymore Posted 1 May 2019 Posted 1 May 2019 I used to dream of him playing for us as some some sort of weird fantasy (bit like when Sven was apparently after Becks) but after all that's happened I could see some one like us where he chooses to finish his career. I'm sure he commented on us when we won the league. Weirder things have happened, like us winning the league!
spacemunky Posted 1 May 2019 Posted 1 May 2019 In my lifetime he'd be my pick. Certainly my favourite player to watch.
Jattdogg Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 Club football wise, yes. I think Ronaldo takes it on the international stage against messi.

Genuinely confused .... too much for just a confused emoji ...... he commented on our league win because everyone was asked about it ... he didn’t phone Claudio to pass on his congratulations! if he decides to play on beyond Barca then it will be an obscene type pay day season or he will return to Argentina for a final hurrah somewhere emotionally important to him.
peach0000 Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 I reckon history will remember Ronaldo better, purely because he's done it in multiple leagues for multiple clubs.
goose2010 Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 the argument that Messi hasn't made played in the prem is BS the blokes scored 30 odd goals against our "elite" clubs without even playing in the league. To have both Ronaldo and Messi playing in my lifetime is just a blessing really. Will be a sad day when they both retire.

A lot has happened with both of them, plus their various crimes will be forgotten long before their footballing achievements in my opinion.
foxy boxing Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 We've been blessed to have both Messi and Ronaldo in our lifetime. but definitely Messi number one.
Ted Maul Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 Definitely the best in my lifetime, but difficult to compare eras. Messi fans rubbish Pele's goalscoring record due to the amount scored in friendlies but Brazilian teams seemed to play a lot of games like that in those days. His goals to game ratio is actually better in competitive matches anyway (and better than Messi's). 3 World Cups to boot. I've always quite liked the idea that Puskas is the greatest of all time though, despite obviously not seeing much of him- he spearheaded the 'mighty magyars' who completely revolutionised the game with attacking football in the 1950's, scoring and winning loads along the way. Probably just me being a bit of a football history nerd though.

Fox92 Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 You can't have one player, from one position and one era, as "the greatest ever". I'm sure defenders like Beckenbaur and Maldini are the "greatest ever" in terms of their positions.
RussianFox Posted 2 May 2019 Posted 2 May 2019 CR7 won _four_ Champion League titiles in previous five years, scoring _70_ goals, most of them in play-offs. Messi is the most technically gifted ever, and he does miracles no one else can do, etc, but in my mind there's no question who was the best player in 2014-2018. 2009-2013 - Messi was better, and from 2018 onwards probably too. Just an opinion, of course.
