City of Leicester & Leicestershire - The Good and Historical Stuff

Not from Leicester but Dover and they has done the same only not universities but cross channel ferries which are not the great employers they once were.. we have probably the finest Normal castle in the Uk , the pharos a Roman light house the remains of a roman painted villa and Saxon ship and a Napoleonic fort but we are a town people pass through rather than visit. Some of the architectural vandalism that was allowed to take place in the nation post war under the supervision of town planners is quite sad.

It’s a crying shame when you see photos of lovely ornate architecture and those buildings were torn down to replace them with brutalist and modernist shite built in the 50s-80s, not that it’s been that much better since

If you're still in total lockdown some viewings for you, can't verify their quality or interest as I've not viewed them  myself yet.

Two new schemes to introduce 20mph speed limits and traffic calming measures are due to be installed in Leicester after being delayed by the coronavirus lockdown.

Work on a new 20mph speed limit is due to be completed in the Wentworth Road area, off Glenfield Road, covering Mostyn Street, Carlisle Street, Bolton Road, Henton Road, Muriel Street and Kirby Road.

Glenfield Road itself will not be affected, although streets to the north of it, including Wentworth Road, Franche Road, St Dunstan Road, Bramley Road and St Pauls Road will be included.

This will connect the new scheme to existing 20mph limits to the east of Fosse Road North.

The scheme was originally due to come into effect in March, but will now be completed by the end of June.

It follows a consultation with residents in which the vast majority – 89 percent – supported the planned 20mph limit.

Leicester City Council has said this scheme is expected to cost about £5,000 including signs, lines and the paperwork needed to introduce the limit.

A second initiative is due to be introduced in Brading Road and Medina Road, off Groby Road, in response to a petition from residents in 2016 to reduce traffic speeds.

This scheme was also delayed by the lockdown conditions and is now expected to be put in place in August.

Further traffic calming and 20mph limits are likely to be installed in the wider area in future as part of the 2023/24 programme of works.

A consultation on the proposals showed 77 percent of those who responded supported traffic calming measures.

The work is expected to cost £20,000 from the city council’s budget for active travel and road safety.

The works at both sites are the latest in a citywide rolling programme of introducing 20mph speed limits and traffic calming measures in residential areas where requested to do so.

Since the start of a major programme of 20mph zones began in 2011, 67 schemes have been brought in covering 1,200 streets and more than 250km of the city’s roads.

Around 72 percent of the city’s schools are now in areas with 20mph speed limits.

Part of Belgrave Gate is set to close as the area undergoes a major resurfacing programme.

Numerous road closures will be put in place from July 18 as the £2m project begins.

The stretch of road between Belgrave Circle and Burleys roundabout will be completely resurfaced from Saturday July 18 and will involve partial road closures for up to 11 days.

It is a vital part of the ongoing Belgrave Gate improvement scheme which will create a safer and more attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists between Haymarket Bus Station and Leicester’s Golden Mile, and significantly improve the condition of the road for motorists.

Resurfacing work will also take place on the central reservation and inbound carriageway of Belgrave Gate, between Belgrave Circle and Burleys roundabout.

This will involve a full closure of the inbound route for up to seven days. Clearly signed diversions will be in place via Abbey Park Road and St Margaret’s Way (A6).

Lane restrictions will also in place on the outbound carriageway of Belgrave Gate, between Burleys roundabout and Painter Street for two days from Saturday July 18.

Then, from Saturday July 25, resurfacing work is due to move to the outbound carriageway which will be closed to traffic for up to four days. Diversions will be in place via St Margaret’s Way and Abbey Park Road, or via St Matthew’s Way, the A47 and onto Dysart Way.

Local diversions will also be in place throughout the works to ensure traffic can access the St Matthew’s small business area and Charter Street industrial estate.

Work to create a new route across Burleys roundabout will begin later this summer. Some overnight road closures will be required. Full details will be publicised nearer the time.

Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “This latest phase of the Connecting Leicester programme is creating a safer and more attractive route linking the city centre with the Golden Mile and Abbey Park.

“This important scheme will add to the growing network of new cycleways to and from the city centre that provide safe routes from nearby neighbourhoods.

“It is vital that we continue to invest in providing the infrastructure needed to encourage more people to make the switch to healthier and more sustainable ways of commuting and travelling around the city.”

A first phase of work, to create new cycle tracks and improve the route between Abbey Street and Burleys roundabout was completed last year.

The overall Belgrave Gate improvement scheme will cost £2million. This second phase will be mostly funded with Government cash from the Transforming Cities Fund.

Work is due to be complete by early autumn.

That area definitely needs something to help it because it's a dreary as sin but I've always admired how the council give off the impression the Golden Mile is some cosmopolitan melting pot. It's largely a shitheap with a few great curry houses running off it.

Have to agree, sadly.

It's only the opposite of this at Diwali with the light switch-on.

Thanks DavieG for posting these. Definitely bookmarked for looking at after work. My Dad used to do oral history walkarounds in Leicester but because I don't live near the city I never went on any of the walkarounds and only did them informally with my Dad.

If you like walking and want some local routes in and around Leicester and the County try choosehowyoumove.com

It's a decent site giving details and descriptions with maps of walking routes in Leicestershire. We've done a couple this week and they've been quiet and off the beaten track although there are walks that take in some historical places of interest in the city and some rural towns and villages.

Worth a look.
