A City in Music: Leicester - the underdog of the Midlands

Recommended Posts

I recall playing Sumo, The Shed and The Charlotte in my gigging days, yet every time I went to either of them to see other bands there was never many in... I've said it before, but I'm very pleasantly surprised the Shed is still going. Before Curve and the Cultural Quarter, Yeoman St. and that end of Humberstone Gate was basically a wasteland with very little reason to go up there (apart from Academy of Sound, RIP). There must've been some hardcore supporters frequenting it over the years.

Although it was in a prime location, The Charlotte never seemed to get custom from the ever-expanding DMU student crowd (and campus) at the time, which could've saved it, and in a way I think it was mismanaged. Places like Soar Point and the Polar Bear seemed preferable, almost certainly because they were dirt cheap.

In the late 80s you could get a chilli and a pint for a quid. No shit. Saturday lunchtime deal.

Is The Shed the pub off Yeoman St. area that had open mike nights and seemed to "specialise" in blues and  country? If so I always wanted to go there but never seemed to find the time in the evenings to travel to it.

'Can’t wait to see them again': Leicester live music venue The Shed set to welcome back punters after pandemic

A Leicester venue has undergone massive renovations during lockdown to help people to 'get in The Shed' safely when it reopens this weekend.

The Shed, in Yeoman Street, closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and finally has a date set for their first night of business in over 16 months

I didn't realise the lead singer of The Human League, Phillip Oakley, was from Hinckley until the other day. The number of bands the county has contributed members to is really outsized.

lol

I saw them at Leicester Race Course on ladies day what seems like about ten years ago now.

Went with a bunch of people from work, got absolutely fvcking wrecked. Me and Mrs Finners were the youngest in our group by about a decade if not more, the 80s kids were really getting in to it. Most of our enjoyment came from taking the piss. Good day with surprisingly cheap beer.

Made my money back on the horses and all to round off a decent day.

Shit music though. lol
