Gené and Tonic Posted 7 November 2005 Posted 7 November 2005 I would personally like to see him up-front. It was a topic on the phone in tonight and I am keen on the idea. Someone used the example of Ashley Young at Watford and how well he is doing as a winger turn strker, and the same can be said for Theo Walcott. In my opinion Smith would be perfect until Chambers is old enough to play in that position. The only question is who to play him with. Hume would be good, as we'd have bags of pace and skill, but both may not be out and out strikers, more like playmakers, whereas with Watford and Southampton, they have King and Fuller as the partners, who are goal-getters. Hammond does not have the quality to play up-front in the side I think, and also Dublin isn't the answer. That leaves us with De Vries, who I think would be the better option, as he would be able to hold up the ball (with his feet! no more long balls to him please) and play Smith into the space, where he would be able to exploit and torture the opposition defense. Playing Smith with either Hume or De Vries would both be good options, and Levein should at least give it a try to see how it works. Also, playing Smith upfront would not only give us more attacking options and maybe increase our goal-ratio, but he would be getting in the game far more than he would at left wng. So my proposed front line for the next game is De Vries and Smith, if it works, keep it that way. If it doesn't seem to offer any attacking potency, try him with Hume for the game after, and if that doesn't seem to work, Levein will have all rights to abandon it. But he should give it a chance. You never know.
Milky Posted 7 November 2005 Posted 7 November 2005 i suppose we HAVE to play him where arsene wenger wants him to play. if arsene sees him as a left winger we must play him their. the fact is it's all down to arsenal.
The People's Hero Posted 7 November 2005 Posted 7 November 2005 I disagree with the fact that he'd be better used as a forward. He's been very effective on the wing, where we don't have a lot of decent options. Also, putting him up front would nullify his threat in my opinion as the temptation seems to be to play long ball - the service just isn't good enough.
Guest Gist Posted 7 November 2005 Posted 7 November 2005 Yeh your right Arsenal have the decencensy to let us have him on loan we should play him in his natural posistion , i prefer him on the left anyway
Head Honcho Posted 7 November 2005 Posted 7 November 2005 Yeh your right Arsenal have the decencensy to let us have him on loan we should play him in his natural posistion , i prefer him on the left anyway But it's us who are paying his wages, we should play him where we see fit if Arsene doesn't like it he can have him back. We can't allow ourselves to be dictated to by Arsenal. Loaning players works both ways we get a player they have him off their wage bill.

To be fair, we don't know how much we're paying towards his wages. Keep Smith on the left wing - unless Jase makes a return, of course.

IDEA OR IKEA Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 UP FRONT AND ALSO AT THE HEART OF THE DEFENCE SO HE CAN PLAY THE BALL TO HIMSELF
Ric Flair Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 If he plays upfront it means we haven't got any decent wingers except Sylla who's vastly inconsistent. I'd keep him on the wing with the idea of getting him involved with the front two as much as possible which............. you guessed it! means we need an attacking full back supporting him and that's got to be The Sheehan.
Thracian Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 Certainly on the wing. It is a glaring weakness in our team and, with our best players selected, he would fit in as easily on either left or right.
Onion Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 Not sounding too unrealistic I would like him to play a C.Ronaldo role, but in the sense of short pass-and-recieve passes and not taking on players. I would like Momo and Smith to switch sides ocasionally allowing more attacking around the 18 yard box, If possesion is about to be lost a pass to the corner flag would lead to a cross in the box for DeepFreece to nod on target. Can dream eh?
BenFilbert Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 Why would you want him up front when he would be so much more effective on the wing. We need de Vries and Hume up front. Elvis/Sylla on right and Hamil/Smith on left. Joey and Kisnorbo in the middle.

BenFilbert Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 oh yes bags of creativity with those two in the middle. We've been doing pretty well with them recently you idiot! And there's plently of creativity on the wings.
Manwell Pablo Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 We've been doing pretty well with them recently you idiot! And there's plently of creativity on the wings. Theyve hardly played togther as their both similar players, when they have its been in a 4-5-1 .... you idoit.
BenFilbert Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 Theyve hardly played togther as their both similar players, when they have its been in a 4-5-1 .... you idoit. No it hasn't! And you can't spell idiot!
AyewJoking Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 Smith would be wasted up front because there is no one to create chances.
Manwell Pablo Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 No it hasn't! And you can't spell idiot! when have they started togther when we werent playing 4-5-1
Manwell Pablo Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 when have they started togther when we werent playing 4-5-1 Im sorry Ben they have started togther in 4-4-2 all of about 3 times! of which we have lost two and won one. Scoring two goals both from set pieces.
Hitesh Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 left Wing. He is needed there to provide service for the strikers!
Nationwider Posted 8 November 2005 Posted 8 November 2005 I'd like him to play at the Walkers Stadium every other Saturday from August to May until 2012, when we sell him to Barcelona for £45M.

That'll do fine. Talk about an oasis in the desert (and it would be, of course, when City were playing Friday ). A winger who actually beats people. He should be subject to a protection order like any other rare breed.

He will look amazing one minute, the next his first touch will be 3 yards in front of him. I think its more of the fact that smith is consistently able to go round people that sets him apart.
