we have a small pond, about 4' square and 4'deep. despite being mainly shaded by a large broad leafed Fatsia bush, we still have issues with blanket weed (the long filamentous algae) that attaches itself to the sides and pipework etc. We have a waterfall feature fed by a submersible pump and external filter with a UV lamp. This keeps the water clear but does not stop the blanket weed growing in the summer.

We tried a small water lily plant but the fish ate all the leaves!! got some stuff from the aquatic shop at Palmers garden centre. Turned the water milky white for a day or so and seemed to do the trick but it soon returned a few weeks later.

Aeration is essential in hot weather as without it the water becomes less oxygenated and any animal life will die. We lost a whole load of Koi and Orfe the other year when the pump packed in while we were on holiday, that's why we now have a small fountain as well just in case the main pump fails. Even without fish, the invertebrates and other pondlife will  not last long without sufficient oxygenation of the water.

Not only does the water attract wildlife to the garden (the birds love to drink and bath in the waterfall) it adds sound and movement and we have submersible solar powered lights with changeable colour filters to add atmosphere and lighting in the evenings.

Stick some barley straw in your pond in febuary/march, it rots down and produces enzymes that kill off blanket weed.

Thought this was a thread about Chelsea/England supporters....

If it were, I'd have called it "Scum".

Plants will oxygenate a wildlife pond sufficiently. If you have fish then you need to add pumps/aeration devices. This is mainly due to the density of fish to pond size as fish detritus will alter the chemical balance. Koi and Orfe are notoriously fragile and ALWAYS need extra aeration, native aquatic invertebrates will be fine if you have plenty of oxygenating plants and sufficient shade.
