Turkish and Swiss players fight in tunnel

Recommended Posts

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/socc...0264/index.html

Turkish and Swiss players fought in the tunnel on the way to the lockeroom following their World Cup playoff Wednesday, and one Swiss player was reportedly hospitalized.

Defender Stephane Grichting was taken to Acibadem hospital following the scuffle, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Switzerland player Benjamin Huggel kicked Turkey trainer Mehmet Ozdilek as the two teams entered the tunnel after the game, but it is unclear what prompted Huggel.

Turkey's Alpay Ozalan then tried to kick Huggel in retaliation, but instead made contact with a Switzerland player in front of him.

Huggel then hit Ozalan on the back of the head and the two players wrestled each other to the ground, after which a number of other players joined in.

Acidem Hospital confirmed that a Swiss player was admitted for treatment, but would give no details on his condition, Anatolia said. Switzerland coach Kobi Kuhn also confirmed the hospitalization, Anatolia said.

Tensions were high even before the crucial match, with the Turkish team complaining of ill treatment in the first leg in Bern, Switzerland.

Turkey coach Fatih Terim said Switzerland striker Alexander Frei cursed at him and gave him the finger after the first match, but Frei denies doing so.

Turkey won Wednesday's match 4-2, but Switzerland qualified for the World Cup finals on away goals.

Turkish people and football... Very fanatic. Too fanatic at some points. And they provocated a lot. Have you seen the way the Swiss team was "welcomed" upon arrival at the airport? Turkish fans insulted them heavily, cursing and throwing items against the team bus.

Wonder what our Turkish Fox, Ali Eren, has to say about that match.

The event is probably closely connected to the whole "honour" tradition in Turkey. Worthy? I don't know.

At least no more Turks at the WC. After today's occurences, I should really go buy a Doner with a Swiss scarf around my neck and smile as good as I can. lol

All that counts is that we're in Germany.

HOPP SCHWIIZ!

hahaha, just seen this on the news.

Alpay kicked one of the Swiss players up the arse only to be jumped on by another Swiss player who then fell over! All this after a Swiss dude had kicked a Turkish coach up the arse.

Class

Petty violence in football is neither big nor clever.

But its damn entertaining and frankly, there's not enough of it. That's some decent footage of the ruck. Weird blue tent they all ran into, though.

Well done the Swiss. We'll miss the Turks for their footy, but not for the "sportsmanship".

When will UEFA/FIFA take action against Turkey both at club level and international. There are constant problems of violence (in and out the ground), throwing objects, obsentites etc. Yet they escape punishment all the time - for last nights actions simple:-

All Turkeys games for Euro champs are played behind closed doors in Neutral country - simple as that jokers!

The imminent investigation of this fracas will prove that the Turks instigated these violent scenes as everybody knows the Swiss, by law, do not start conflicts nor join them if unprovoked. ;)

That video clip was ridiculous. The player in the Swiss #14 shirt (a quick check of the lineup shows it's Benjamin Huggel) gives a dynamic performance. A wonderful, albeit brief, piece of cinema.

According to SSN, Sepp Blatter "described himself as 'hopping mad'". Sepp - it's barking mad. You crazy old chauvanist you.

If FIFA ban anyone for anything EVER, I'll be astonished. Jellyfishes of FA proportions, they are.

The sly kick by Huggel on the Turkish coach gets my vote for "TV Highlight of 2005". :)

It has to be noted, though, that one of the Turkish assistant coaches tried to kick Swiss player Behrami after the final whistle. That triggered Huggel's Kung Fu attack. The TV footage is incomplete and shows only parts of the incident. We are also missing the later clash in the tunnel.

Stephane Grichting has been released from hospital again. I heard he bled pretty badly that night after he got kicked in the balls. But apparently, he's fine again.

Goalkeeper coach Erich Burgener sustained a black eye, and several other Swiss players were injured, too. A German cameraman for channel ZDF was a target as well.

No offense against Turks in general, but that behaviour that night is unacceptable. Same happened a couple of years ago when the German U21 team won down there.

What Alpay is doing in that National Squad is beyond my knowledge. A complete disgrace towards football. Rumour has it that he is notorious for that sort of dumb "actions".

Today, the Swiss National Team has returned to Zurich and was welcomed by hundreds of fans at the airport.

Here's the statement from the FIFA website:

FIFA to launch investigations into incidents relating to World Cup play-offs

17 November 2005

by FIFAworldcup.com

"Following the play-offs for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germanyâ„¢ on 12 and 16 November 2005, FIFA will tomorrow (Friday, 18 November) launch disciplinary investigations to determine the exact nature and perpetrators of incidents that occurred before, during and after certain play-off matches.

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has condemned the events and bemoaned the fact that certain incidents had "trampled all over the spirit of fair play".

FIFA classified all ten World Cup play-off fixtures as high-risk games before a ball had been kicked and for that reason, world football’s governing body assigned a security officer in addition to the match commissioner and refereeing inspector to work closely with the associations to guarantee the safety of those involved and to ensure that the matches passed off without incident.

FIFA will now investigate the events by calling upon reports from these delegates and from the match officials, as well as by taking statements from the associations involved and by looking at additional evidence such as television footage. The investigations will focus on whether and to what extent FIFA’s disciplinary, ethical and safety guidelines were violated.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee will be responsible for reaching decisions after considering all of the evidence gathered. Committee chairman Marcel Mathier (Switzerland) will withdraw from deliberations on the incidents that occurred in connection with matches involving Switzerland.

Appeals against Disciplinary Committee decisions can in certain circumstances be lodged with the FIFA Appeal Committee, before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne can be called upon as the body of final instance in accordance with the FIFA Statutes."

I haven't seen the clips but if there was fighting then both teams should be punished. Not just the Turks.

As has been pointed out earlier, it's a little astonishing to see any fighting spirit from the Swiss anyway!

You'd be surprised. lol

It's boiling and is expected to hit the stage in Summer 2006...

I read somewhere (bbc or sky) that the Turkish Police held back some Cameras and joined in with the attack on the swiss players as someone else said time and time again we see incidents like this in Turkey, it was Alpay who tried to kill Beckham the other year as well!!!

when it comes to football they behave like total w***ers time after time we see the same behaviour and nothing ever gets done about it and instead they get the European Cup Final!!!! although the players and police seem to behave worse than the fans which is even more of a disgrace!!

the Swiss player was very silly but it looks like it was already kicking off in the tunnel before that even happend!!

And now the Turkish press blames US for the incidents in Turkey...

The Turks played bad in the first match. Abysmal. And we could've easily won 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 if some players had used their chances better.

If you can't lose, you don't need to complain!

Turkish football fans (supported by the populist nationalist press) are "famous" for violent outbursts, on and off the pitch. And it's satisfaction enough not to have them in Germany next year.

Sky's Version

It's only available today.

its clear to see that a player from both turkey and switzerland kicked out at an oppossing player. i think they should both be banned for 3 world cup games. if one of us had done that, we`d be hung probably as a kebab :D

It has to be noted, though, that one of the Turkish assistant coaches tried to kick Swiss player Behrami after the final whistle. That triggered Huggel's Kung Fu attack. The TV footage is incomplete and shows only parts of the incident. We are also missing the later clash in the tunnel.

what happened swiss?
