Match Of The Day Opening Titles - How Many Leicester Connections Did You Spot?

Ronnie Radford, Hereford v Newcastle 3rd round replay 5th February 1972.

I travelled up to Filbert Street from London that day full of hope for a great cup run, convinced that we were destined to win the FA Cup some time soon.

We had a strong team out that day for the 4th round tie including Cross, Nish and Glover who’d all played in the final three years earlier. The only inexperienced player was the debutant keeper Carl Jayes and Second Division Leyton Orient weren’t expected to trouble him much behind a defence of Whiteworth, Sjoberg, Cross and Nish.

My memory (such as it is) is that Orient, who included Leicester legend to be Dennis Rofe and European Cup winner to be Ian Bowyer in their ranks, played us off the park and won 2-0.

I do remember clearly my journey back home being miserable thinking that Match of The Day was going to be one long celebration of The Orient. I had no idea at the time of the exploits of Radford and George.

Match of The Day was fantastic to watch that night. Leicester and Orient went almost uncommented on, Hereford had saved my day!

Orient went on to beat the winners from two years earlier Chelsea 3-2 in the 5th round before going out 1-0 to the holders Arsenal in the quarter finals.

The FA Cup, you have to love it.

Another tie that day was Everton 2  Walsall 1. In goal for the Saddlers was young Mark Wallington, who had a blinder, and quickly had big clubs queueing jp to sign up. We won the race the following month.

Well - I missed a massive one there.

It's the black and white picture that makes it difficult to spot - but the number 6 is definitely Peter McGillicuddy of Leatherhead. He's just put them ahead at Filbert Street. They then went two up and had a great chance to make it three. We came back to win 3-2 and avoid a giant-killing even bigger than Wycombe, Harlow, Walsall and all the others.

The game was in 1975 so I don't know why it's black and white.

That player on the right is Graham Cross.

Here's the highlights of that amazing game

Was there standing in the Enclosure in front of the old Main Stand

And here's one more -

If I'd captured a bit more of the shot of Arsenal's celebrations in 1971 you'd have seen not just Frank McLintock, but also, on the left, the two teammates that he brought to Filbert Street when he became manager in 1977 - George Armstrong and Eddie Kelly.

Talking of hate figures, there's a couple of the Crazy Gang from 1988 and it was Dennis Wise with the assist for Lawrie Sanchez who both contributed greatly to Peter Taylor's demise, not that he needed assistance.

The Leatherhead Lip, slagging us off pre-match before the days when it became customary to say nice gentle things about the forthcoming opponent. Often wondered why boxers don't try that to play a bit of mind games. Don't suppose it would sell tickets though.

One day I swear we'll be able to go a whole season without having to be reminded of Roy fvcking Essandoh.

We need a song

Oh, Essandoh, I see you scoring
Hi-o, you did deliver
Oh, Essandoh, Sanchez called you
Hi-o, it was you day

You brought us misery

To the tune of

Oh, Shenandoah, I hear you calling
Hi-o, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Hi-o, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide, Missouri

Well something like that 😄

Not sure but was one of those collecting the trophy at the end Billy Wright from Wolves beating us in the 1949 final?

Close. Yeah Billy lifted it in 49 when they beat us. The shot they show here is Bill Slater when they won it in 1960.

There is a kind of connection there as they beat us in the quarter-final - one of those great Leicester cup runs that has long been forgotten because of what happened in 1961 and 1963. This was a photo our old mate Bernie took at that quarter-final: Leicester 1 Wolves 2.

And that looks like the same Bill Slater to the keeper's right.

I'm always amazed at how many TV pundits have Leicester City connections.

Gary Lineker

Martin O'Neill

Martin Keown

Dion Dublin

Pontius Kaamark

Robbie Savage

Emile Heskey

Alan Smith

Steve Claridge

About 10 years ago all these were regular football pundits, not so much now.
