I'm looking for a way to keep fit, but also to relax.

Basically, my job is at times stressful and I feel I need to unwind. I'm also very unfit, which is proven everytime I play for my mate's 5 a side team. I'd like to find something which gives me a 'release', keeps me fit and is fairly interesting. Doesn't have to be too competitive.

I'm not saying that I'd consider any of these but does anyone have any experiences/views on the following as many of them have interested me in a purely curious way for some time...

1) Yoga

2) Martial Arts

3) Acupuncture (a few people I know swear by it)

4) Hypnotism

What are people's views on the above?

I have actually considered yoga or something in the past, but always thought it a bit girly and perhaps embarrassing to do some of the positions, if for example, unable... martial arts I've always fancied. The other two are just things which people I know have tried and said have helped them in terms of stress etc, what do you lot think.

I'd like to finish by saying that I'm not actually a stressball or anything, I just don't really do anything at the moment other than play cricket (during the summer), go to work, see my girlfriend, drink and sit indoors.

Also, this is a shit thread isn't it?

What about aromatherapy?

What about aromatherapy?

Really difficult to give you advice without really knowing too much about you (apart from your tendency to self-indulgent jokes :P )

I'd say you should try yoga/pilates/stretching/relaxation or even breathing exercises. All these have the potential to allow you to relax both physically and mentally while making you more flexible (at least in the case of yoga/Pilates and stretching).

PS: A good yoga/pilates class should not be competitive. You are there to re-connect with your body, find out how it is feeling, get rid of unnecessary tension and work at your own level. Only the instructor should be watching everyone in the class and even then in a supportive, not judgemental role. This is the only way to ensure the activity benefits you most.

Aromatherapy is also good. Essential oils (appropriately diluted!!!) have quite a positive effect, both through smell and direct application to the skin. The best one/easiest to use for relaxation is perhaps lavender. Always mix with sufficient carrier oil (e.g. almond oil, unless a nut allergy is present). A couple of drops of lavender essential oil (DON'T go for cheap substitutes, such as room freshener) in your pillowcase also faciliate sleep.

Massage is another thing I would consider. It is often forgotten in this country, but it has amazing relaxing properties plus it stimulates circulation, lymphatic drainage, toxins removal, improves skin tone etc...

Hope this helps! :)

Well sometime through the year there was a Fitness Club thread made, Since then I have joined a Health and Fitness club because I was unfit, I joined towards the middle/end of the summer and before I started I could hardly run, Now I can run upto 15 minutes at a fairly high consistant speed, and I do feel (abit ) fitter, Now I have worked on my fitness I have started to work on my weights.

After the gym I normally always go to the pool, spa, sauna, steam room, that is a nice way to relax, So my advice is to try and find a fitness club with all the pool area stuff, e.t.c, Go to the gym to get fit and relax with the pool stuff.

In the Fitness Club thread made a few months ago someone bought up the subject of pools, e.t.c, and how disgusting things they are (Think Lisa is very against pools if I remember right)...Having read some of the horrible thing wrote about that I thought i'd struggle to go the pool again but I seem to be ok.

Update Lisa - Some disgusting things at our club...I have saw a kid swallow loads of water from the pool and throw up at pool side (Nice ) and also signs have gone up Reminding people not to shave in spa, sauna, steam room icon8.gif...Weirdo's!

I rely on Shiatsu from time to time.

It's really good, helps a lot getting rid of strained muscles and stress symptoms, relaxes big time and if you can get a student to work on you, it's not even pricey.

i can recommend a decent yoga class. I don't go too often, but you really don;t need to worry about being judged by anyone, they are too busy concentrating on what they are doing. It's all about focus. Also a good instructor will tell you which positions you shouldn't try and achieve if you are in any discomfort etc. Most places (I go to David lloyd) will have a mix of classes such as relaxation, which is slower and more restful moving up to more active classes for the more experienced and fitter participants. Start off with an intro class. Yo uwill be amazed how much better it can make you feel.

Yoga is apparently fantastic for relexing...

A couple of the personal trainers at our gym decided to take it up and found it very beneficial.....they are trying to shed the image of it being 'girly'

One is an under 20's leicester tigers player and the other is a two times british champion discus player

Eating good food (instead of takeaway) and Golf helped me back in shape

When I played 5 a side last night.. which I enjoyed. I was so beat at the end of it that I still felt a little short of breath 15 minutes after.

For someone who ran 27km a few months ago, that is a poor state of affairs.

Yoga is brilliant if you have the discipline. Turn the lights down, right music, bottle of decent red, a few scented candles, get the girlfriend to join in and it can turn into more than a relaxing evening. In fact it can be the naughtiest way of keeping fit you can ever imagine.

I used yoga to train during my time as a professional squash player rather than pounding the streets because it was such a natural way of excercising, using your lungs to the maximum, aiding flexibility and remaining relaxed.

My son did aikido (that's the Steven Seagal martial art) and it's wondrously beneficial both mentally and physically providing you can remain motivated and, again, disciplined.

Finally, if you're young enough, there's boxing. You can join a club and just train if you don't fancy being whacked around but it really is excellent for fitness and for comeraderie (although I imagine you're a bit intellectual for a boxing environment).

My son boxed while he had the time and I was involved in my work and I'm convinced there is no better exercise.

Whatever you do you've gotta want it, believe in it and be prepared to make sacrifices to attain any competence. As with anything you get out what you put in.

Simplest for a busy man is yoga but another thing, you might consider, is dancing cos that keeps you fit as well and in a very natural manner and that's important.

I've sat in the sauna before now and seen blokes walk in, have a shave, then walk out. That's not even the most disgusting thing I've seen.

I'm waiting for the sign that says 'Ladies, please use sanitory deposit bins provided'. Some pople have no shame.

James - Carl has done yoga, and he is as flexible as granite. His 'downward-facing dog" is something to behold! Seriously though, the only reason I've not been to yoga is because I can't get up on a Sunday morning early enough at the moment.
