I remember back in the Nige, Steve Walsh (recruitment) days when they specifically looked at the character of players as part of player profiling and they actively targeted ‘captain material’ with the likes of Schmeichel, Morgan, Fuchs, Hammond, Powell, Brown (!?), Wasilewski, Phillips etc.

All this sulking and ‘woe is me’ bs wouldn’t have happened under their watch

Edit: Schmeichel was a SGE signing

Echo a lot of comments in this thread.

Getting the right core of players with the right mentality, who will bring the right culture is so important. When we had the likes of Schmeichel, Morgan, Fuchs and Huth especially, that was such a solid core of players who were all worthy of the captains armband. I look at Brentford over the years as an example, Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Christian Norgaard, Mathias Jensen and they had Pontus Jansson at one point too, a very strong experienced reliable group.

We don’t have that anymore. Our core of the “leadership group” consists of Justin, Winks, Ayew, Choudhury, Ricardo and Vestergaard. The only one worthy of the captains armband is Ricardo, and thankfully Cifuentes has identified this. When he is out injured though, you have to turn to the likes of Justin and Choudhury. That is yet another indication of how far we’ve fallen.

The experienced core also needs a complete revamp, otherwise our mentality.will continue to get worse.

This is what happens when you give out ridiculous wages, esp after going through relegations and new managers every 6 months this is where we end up, a group of players that simply do not care, alot of these players thought they would come in and move to a bigger club 12/18months later.

Leadership is one of those easy bullshit nebulous things people turn to when things are just bad.

A Coady character doesn’t fix this

That's because Coady is a twerp.

A few ****ing Roy Keanes in the dressing room would certainly help.

Did any of the players do any post match press yesterday?

About time we heard from some of this so called leadership group.

Like him or loathe him we need some Maddison style fronting up.

Why? It states a genuine fact.

Coady was a genuine leader - his record at Wolves proves that. Even in 2023-24 we were unbeaten in every league game in which he played.

I'd have preferred to have kept him at City in preference to Farce or Panic, but the payroll needed cutting and Wrexham - whom we must now consider a rival club 🤮🤮🤮 - offered to take him off our hands.

There is a serious leadership crisis at City both on and off the pitch. It was evident even under Maresca and has only deepened since he left.

Wrexham are reaping the Coady rewards aren't they

Shows you all you need to know about leadership when Justin is the captain today and been widely reported is in advanced negotiations with Leeds. Shouldn’t be in the squad let alone captain. What sort of message is that to the lads who actually want to be here and play ? First mistake by Marti, he now really needs to get tough with the squad and the ones who want out, don’t play.

I genuinely think Marti is being told to play players to help drive up fees from prospective buyers. Hence why JJ and Bilal both played yesterday to send a message to their suitors pay up or feck off trouble is i think too many know they are off and as a result have checked out.
