He was on loan to Hull from Trabzonspor in Turkey where he will have negotiated a huge wage when he joined them on a free.

Pretty incredible, given how poor/slow we've at doing business in the last few years. But I guess financial realities, relegation clauses and low appetite for playing in League One make things a bit easier. 

Doesn't feel that Skipp has really gone as he'll still have two years left with us when he comes back. Mavididi and Kristiansen will still have a year. Can only hope they have decent seasons and they return in demand.

My takeaways:

 

- Generally very happy with the window and the business done;

- Academy kids given a chance to shine, or else sent on to pastures new for a net benefit (loans to help sharpen them up or sales);

- Almost all the ‘dead wood’ of the last two seasons gone  (notably not Okoli/Faes), so a near-full clear out. Wage bill cut;

- Strengthened every position, including long standing need for defense and strikers. Caveat: goal keeper now an issue after last night;

- Good use of PL loan signings (Leicester is the new Brighton);

- Many new players known for work rate/leadership ethic;

- Kudos to management for all of this, but shouldn’t have been in this position to begin with;

- Up to Russell Martin now - management have backed him, the team is assembled. No excuses;

- May still take a little time to bed in and cohere as a team;

- Justified cause for optimism;

- It’s the hope that kills you.

I often think that was the beginning of the fall. Rodger’s said he needed to refresh the squad, implying they weren’t good enough then he found out there was no money, so he threw a strop.

He also spoke about the players at that time not having enough hunger, which has been an issue ever since. It was only Maresca who managed to counteract it, and with the squad turnover this summer, it should mean that Martin isn't up against it in this respect, unlike the previous managers.

Overall very happy with it, especially the deadline day business as that plugged all of the obvious gaps - especially some help up top with Riis.

 

Still unsure about Cullen, but think you need to give the new faces time to gel and for the manager to find their best place in the team. Hoping he comes good but not holding my breath with him, seems like one of those players where nobody knows his best position.

 

Mcfarlane is a beast, think he could be incredible for us this year. A lot of them though seem good on paper, think we are going to have to give them time to prove their worth.

 

All in all though, the majority of the swamp has been drained. Be nice to see the back of Okoli and Faes though!

Chaplin, Lundstram & O’Hora I feel will be huge signings for their experience & before you have chance to groan at the word experience, the lack of nearly cost us the win on Tuesday night.

It was great to see the young lads attacking at every opportunity but there’s a time and place to go all guns blazing & 15mins to go when 2 up and about to record a 1st win isn’t 1 of them.

I see Burns was getting a lot of stick when he came on but what I saw was someone trying to manage a game, yes he might have gone down the wing for the ball only to find itself back with Souttar but that eats up time, he wasn’t getting down to their box looking up seeing no one and just pumping the ballin or trying to take on a few more, he also drew a few cheap fouls.

Compare that to McFarlane, Page and Braybrooke who rightly were on their arse but not realising they were mentally drained also and just kept going for the jackpot…I know in our heart of hearts we would encourage it also but it wasn’t the right thing to do at that time.

Watson added to the issue being young and enthusiastic also, being fresh he was having ago and had McFarlane overlapping him meaning the whole of our left side was open for a counter which they did numerous times & probably should have at least drawn in those last 5-10mins with better finishing and McCarthy pulling out a few stops.

 

Lundstram will be invaluable in those periods along with those other 2 in just calming things down, we all want to see goals but had we threw that away Tuesday everyone would have blamed Martin but it wasn’t his fault directly it was down to a lack of experience in managing a game from the young lads.

Squad feels so much healthier now the likes of Choudhury, Skipp & Mavididi have even if just on loan

This is where we need a set of captains on the field. The youngsters need telling this is what we are doing. This is what I need you to do. This is what's been missing. I'm hopeful we've the right characters now through the spine of the team to do this

Interesting that this positive window - mainly getting rid of deadwood - has coincided with a person involved in that side of things. It rather implies that Jon Rudkin isn’t very good at his job.
