Babylon Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Welsh Deal Close Leicester City hope to complete the loan signing of Andy Welsh from Sunderland today (Wednesday). The 22-year-old left-sided player is set to join the Foxes until the end of the season, having made 15 appearances for the Black Cats so far this campaign. It is anticipated that the deal will go through following the completion of the relevant paperwork and medical checks. City boss Rob Kelly said: "I first knew of Andy when he was at Stockport County. We had a look while I was at Blackburn, but we were unable to do anything at that time and I've followed his progress since. He's a quick, direct left-sided winger. He's got a good attitude and I am sure he will help us in our battle against relegation. "As soon as we made our interest known he wanted to come here and that's always pleasing. He's keen and has an appetite to come and play for us." Welsh joined Sunderland from Stockport in November 2004, having made a total of 81 appearances over a three-year stint in the first team at Edgeley Park. Born in Manchester, Welsh has represented Scotland at under 21 level.
Ric Flair Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Very talented player, always thought he was a right winger. Where this leaves Smudger i'm not sure, I suppose both could play on the wing and swap sides if needed. Having said that Smith hasn't even been playing recently, shame. Nice to see us strengthening our side though, I saw this lad a few times last season only via highlights from the championship but he looked a snip at 20k they paid for him. Thought he and Whitehead were Sunderland's best younger players last season.
The People's Hero Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Whitehead is quality. This guy has shown glimpses of quality too, but have to be honest, I don't know too much about him. My mate is a Sunderland fan and rates Whitehead, Arca, Welsh and Elliott as their best players so... could be a good signing.

Perhaps this is one we'll be signing in the summer - smith won't be joining permanently so we're getting someone in to strengthen the squad for the remainder of the season and also as a possible first teamer for next season

Welsh is is meant to be ok, but it's a bit worrying he can't even get a place in a rubbish team like Sunderland He's played 15 times for them this season. Plus he's a left winger, where Julio Arca plays who incidentally is one of the best left sided players in country on his day.

syston_fox Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Damn - you just beat me! According to the sunderland site, they have the power to recall him at any time after the first 28 days.
Ric Flair Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 http://www.lcfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/...~795526,00.html He looks abit like an even uglier version of Richard Stearman in that picture!!

Welsh is is meant to be ok, but it's a bit worrying he can't even get a place in a rubbish team like Sunderland He's played 15 times this season in the premiership. I don't think too many of our other players would have done that if at a premiership club.
The Don Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 He looks abit like an even uglier version of Richard Stearman in that picture!! He looks like a big wet lettuce. - He's gotta start Sat I'm thinking
Manwell Pablo Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Got to say Kelly has some options for Saturday now will be very interesting to see what XI he comes up with. I think Welsh is a extremly good signing, even better if its with a view to a perminent move, as were going to need a left winger soon.

Me too, but with Sunderland coming back down they'll need him as Arca will go in the summer I reckon, as will Liam Lawrence and possibly Whitehead.
