Louise Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Graydon said in his interview on World that Rob had him talking to people about coming here so I suppose this isn't that much of a shock in that respect... I can't really remember him playing for Sunderland so I can't comment on how good he is or isn't, but its a signing that makes me more optimistic than the Brevett one. The loan until the end of the season does make me think that we want to sign him permanently, but if he's as good as some say I can't see why Sunderland would want to get rid really as they're gonna be in this league next season. It does make me wonder whether Smith doesn't get on with Kelly or is not enjoying his time here now that Craig has left as I'd have thought a right sided winger would be more of a priority than a left one.

I have just read that Welsh's contract expires this summer, but would require a fee as he's under 25. I've only seen bits of him and he looked decent, a good battler aswell. I will be disappointed if that's it for Smith at Leicester, he showed so much promise and I doubt Welsh will be as dangerous as him but he might be more effective for the team as a whole battling relegation.
The People's Hero Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 I think more than anything else it at least gives us the opportunity to shake it up a bit on the left hand side now. Too often, injuries/suspensions have left us pretty toothless or with players out of position down the left.

Well, TBH I was sorry to see Smith leave about three months ago Has been off the boil or out of the team since mid December . Welsh on the left Smith ( returning to form ) on the right could be a extremly good combination though if you ask me either that or Sylla can finally start playing well. Welsh may not be as much like a old fashioned tricky winger with pace as Smith is, but I think he could certainly be more consistent, I rate his final ball too.

Manwell Pablo Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 I've heard is crossing is top notch. Yep. Somthing we have not had all season really.
Lanchester redandwhite Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Hi, Sunderland fan here. Andy Welsh will be a good signing for you. We signed him for £15k from Stockport reserves 18 months ago. He played a few times in the Championship winning season for us (IIRC he played againt you the day we guaranteed promotion), and did well. He is a skilful left winger, an orthodox winger who likes to beat a man, and try and get crosses in . He gets into a fair share of goalscoring positions too. He is a confidence player, he sometimes overelaborates, and he can be inconsistent, but at Championship level he will do a good job. This season due to injuries he ended up playing more games than he was ready for in the Premiership, started brightly, faded badly, and hasnt been seen since before Christmas. But hopefully he will do well for you, and come back next season to us.

Thracian Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 The Ryan Smith situation is a bit mystifying. I have no reason whatsoever to say this and apologise if it misleads but I got the impression that Smith was going to be on the bench Saturday and that his place was then taken by Sylla. I could be totally wrong or any change could have been to do with injury or illness. But it could also be that he said something. Kelly quite often talks about the "right sorts" and all managers want to be surrounded by loyal, dedicated, talented but pliant staff who will react exactly as they wish - but it doesn't happen. I wonder if a few years without trophies might start endearing a few more villainous or temperamental types to Kelly's psyche. It was a special talent that MON had - being able to take such a collection of temperaments and mould them into an effective fighting unit. I don't know anything about Smith's character. He's certainly lost form and looks like he needs a mentor. But my hope is that we now have two decent wingers to choose from and even to use at once on occasions - but that last idea might be a wild dream. Certainly it is no use to anyone if Smith is not playing.
spirefox Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Whilst I've never seen him play ,I can remember him getting some rave reviews as an all action, totally commited player-a bit different to Smithy I'm afraid.(I'm sure Welsh has been sent off for getting too stuck in ,so he will really fit in here!)
Cat Burger Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Doesn't say anything about his goalscoring?! let's hope Fryatt starts finding the net again!

He got sent off once against Liverpool, but the red card was rescinded. Totally committed is not really his thing - by that I dont mean he doesnt put the effort in, but the defensive side of his game isnt exactly where his strengths lie.

Certainly it is no use to anyone if Smith is not playing. Kelly has said that Smith was all set for a place on the bench but his foot flared up and was forced to miss out. But as you say it doesn't appear that he's Kelly's cup of tea, that could all change if given the chance but time isn't what he's got.

Seems very strange that Rob Kelly would get someone of similar ilk to Smith who is also on loan. Unless he plays Smith or Welsh on the right wing. Has Welsh ever played right wing?
Lanchester redandwhite Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Doesn't say anything about his goalscoring?! let's hope Fryatt starts finding the net again! 7 goals in 66 starts in his career. He should have got many more than that, he does get in the positions to score more.
Lanchester redandwhite Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 I think that could be said about your whole team All too true, mate.
Strokes Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Well if Kelly doesn't like Smith then i am glad he is getting someone in to correct the left-sided problem, as Tiatto was a disgrace on saturday and should never where the armband again.
Ric Flair Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 All too true, mate. Dean Whitehead is a fantastic player though, hopefully you'll receive a large enough transfer fee for him that will allow you to build a better squad that might get you back up and stay there. After all you deserve it having to withstand Peter Reid for so long.

They have got some rubbish though, Jonathen Stead cleary not a premier league player, I dont think Liverpool will be too pleased will Le Tallec's performance this season either. Kelvin's dodgy annaul .

We are the club that spent £3m on Stead and Gray as our strikeforce. Into March, and they have 1 goal between them.

Kelvin's dodgy annaul . The whole side is dodgy. We got rid of loads of players, and made 13 signings since promotion. Out of those 13 signings, at best one or two of those would now get in our strongest side. We havent just stood still since getting promoted, we have gone backwards. Cat in hell's chance of promotion next year, bit like yourselves.

That's almost Akinbiyi and Benjamin Mark II are they both of 5 year deals at £20k a week?
