Head Honcho Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Morrissey is as far as I'm concerned God but best living lyricist  ffs have you heard some of the lyrics on his last couple of albums! What a load of bollox! Anyhow define best! How can someone be "the best" you can have your favourites but best no sorry Don't just say they are your best give some examples as to why they are your "best" Example Wake up you sleepy head Put on some clothes, shake up your bed Put another log on the fire for me I've made some breakfast and coffee Look out my window and what do I see A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me All the nightmares came today And it looks as though they're here to stay What are we coming to No room for me, no fun for you I think about a world to come Where the books were found by the Golden ones Written in pain, written in awe By a puzzled man who questioned What we were here for All the strangers came today And it looks as though they're here to stay Oh You Pretty Things Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and Papas insane Oh You Pretty Things Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and Papas insane Let me make it plain You gotta make way for the Homo Superior Look at your children See their faces in golden rays Don't kid yourself they belong to you They're the start of a coming race The earth is a bitch We've finished our news Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use All the strangers came today And it looks as though they're here to stay Oh You Pretty Things Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and Papas insane Oh You Pretty Things Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and Papas insane Let me make it plain You gotta make way for the Homo Superior
Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I'm working on a PhD thesis to justify my preferences and will be handing it out before the first game of next season. Bet you can't wait? Agree Elvis Costello is also very good. "Oliver's Army" is a brilliant piece of song writing. One of the few songs by a white man to address racism. That and "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" by Joe Strummer (RIP). Yeah! Add Joe Strummer to to list "White riot, I wanna riot, white riot, a riot of my own!"
Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Don't start that talking I could talk all night My mind is sleepwalking While I'm putting the world to right Call careers information Have you got yourself an occupation? Oliver's army is here to stay Oliver's army are on their way And I would rather be anywhere else Than here today There was a checkpoint Charlie He didn't crack a smile But it's no laughing party When you've been on the murder mile Only takes one itchy trigger One more widow, one less white nigger Oliver's army is here to stay Oliver's army are on their way And I would rather be anywhere else Than here today Hong Kong is up for grabs London is full of Arabs We could be in Palestine Overrun by a Chinese line With the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne But there's no danger It's a professional career Though it could be arranged With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear If you're out of luck or out of work We could send you to Johannesburg Oliver's army is here to stay, Oliver's army are on their way, And I would rather be anywhere else Than here today, And I would rather be anywhere else Than here today, And I would rather be anywhere else Than here today, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ...... .................................................... Quite brilliant, Elvis.
Head Honcho Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Not by a prolific songwriter but a fine set of lyrics! Here we go again, it's Monday at last, He's heading for the Waterloo line, To catch the 8 a.m. fast, its usually dead on time, Hope it isn't late, got to be there by nine. Pin stripe suit, clean shirt and tie, Stops off at the corner shop, to buy The Times 'Good Morning Smithers-Jones' 'How's the wife and home?' 'Did you get the car you've been looking for?' Let me get inside you, let me take control of you, We could have some good times, All this worry will get you down, I'll give you a new meaning to life - I don't think so. Sitting on the train, you're nearly there You're part of the production line, You're the same as him, you're like tin-sardines, Get out of the pack, before they peel you back. Arrive at the office, spot on time, The clock on the wall hasn't yet struck nine, 'Good Morning Smithers Jones' 'The boss wants to see you alone' 'I hope its the promotion you've been looking for' 'Come in Smithers old boy' 'Take a seat, take the weight off your feet' 'I've some news to tell you' 'There's no longer a position for you' - 'Sorry Smithers Jones'. Put on the kettle and make some tea It's all a part of feeling groovie Put on your slippers turn on the TV It's all a part of feeling groovie It's time to relax, now you've worked your arse off But the only one smilin' is the sun tanned boss Work and work and work and work till you die There's plenty more fish in the sea to fry

What a load of bollox! Anyhow define best! How can someone be "the best" you can have your favourites but best no sorry But surely this thread is about opinion? So naturally your favourite lyricist is your best. Either way I don't listen to Morrissey's stupid solo stuff, his lyrics for tut Smiths were top notch.
Random Burglar Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 It has to be Moz. Billy Bragg (who's playing De Montfort Hall next week) isn't far off though... Am going with my Dad next Thursday to go and see him..Havnt really heard much of his stuff but it is a bit left wing!! He reckons il enjoy it anyway!!
The People's Hero Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Am going with my Dad next Thursday to go and see him..Havnt really heard much of his stuff but it is a bit left wing!! He reckons il enjoy it anyway!! Seen him live a couple of times - he usually puts on a good show.
Katy Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Morrissey by a country mile for me, no one else comes close except perhaps Thom Yorke.
The People's Hero Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 I like Radiohead and all... and there's no doubts that there's some good song-writing going on there, I do however find the lyrics often to be cliched and vapid. Can't help but feel the same whenever I listen to Placebo/Muse...
The People's Hero Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 On lyrics alone, Leonard Cohen has his moments.
Head Honcho Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Morrissey by a country mile for me, no one else comes close except perhaps Thom Yorke. You have never been in love until you've seen the stars reflect in the reservoirs I suppose it depends how you look at it but imo rhyming stars with reservoirs is not the sign of a good songwriter, this doesn't mean I don't like the song it's brilliant, It just sounds lyrically naive and I've found examples like this on many Morrissey/Smiths albums. He has written some fantastic lyrics most of them when with The Smiths but sometimes I just cringe when I hear some of his lyrics. As a performer there aren't many better but as a lyricist not even in my top 20
Nationwider Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 I only thing I thought that Moz did which was truly crass was Suffer Little Children. Lyrically, he might have gone a bit off the boil in the mid-nineties with some mediocre stuff like Our Frank. I thought the stars and reservoirs line was quite witty, and to be honest, if he wants to shoe-horn the word reservoirs into a song, more power to his elbow. Probably not deserving of an Ivor Novello award though. For fans of the Moz-rhyming-couplet, try this: Beware! I bear more grudges Than lonely high court judges When you sleep I will creep Into your thoughts Like a bad debt That you can’t pay Take the easy way And give in Yeah, and let me in...

Chairman of the Bored Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Billy Bragg VERY left wing. Great! Expect a lecture along with some music. First saw him at Leic Uni just after Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy. One man, a guitar and a raging polemic. Utterly brilliant. His music has mellowed a bit since then but his politics haven't. He was on Five Live today having a pop at The Chingford Skinhead (Norman Tebbitt), very funny. The Billster speaks his mind, listen up and learn! Party Political broadcast over.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 DEATH TO CANADA. BOYCOTT THE BASTARDS. CLUBBING SEALS NOT FUNNY. CLUB YOUR LOCAL CANADIAN (apart from Ian Huuuuume). AND DON'T TELL ME NOT ALL CANADIANS SUPPORT IT. THE BASTARDS (apart from Ian Huuuuuume). Sorry for shouting. Mozzer refused to play in Canada on his world tour because of this. Top bloke. Do we have any more Canadians play for us? Matthew Good is Canadian and he's great....as are Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Feist, Broken Social Scene...they're all ok. Rant over.

Saw him In New York supporting The Smiths in 1985. The yanks didn't have a clue what he was on about, they cheered everything he said even though he was slagging their country off
