Ultra Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Billy Bragg VERY left wing. Great! Expect a lecture along with some music. First saw him at Leic Uni just after Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy. One man, a guitar and a raging polemic. Utterly brilliant. His music has mellowed a bit since then but his politics haven't. He was on Five Live today having a pop at The Chingford Skinhead (Norman Tebbitt), very funny. The Billster speaks his mind, listen up and learn! Party Political broadcast over.
Ultra Posted 27 April 2006 Posted 27 April 2006 Not by a prolific songwriter but a fine set of lyrics! Here we go again, it's Monday at last, He's heading for the Waterloo line, To catch the 8 a.m. fast, its usually dead on time, Hope it isn't late, got to be there by nine. Pin stripe suit, clean shirt and tie, Stops off at the corner shop, to buy The Times 'Good Morning Smithers-Jones' 'How's the wife and home?' 'Did you get the car you've been looking for?' Let me get inside you, let me take control of you, We could have some good times, All this worry will get you down, I'll give you a new meaning to life - I don't think so. Sitting on the train, you're nearly there You're part of the production line, You're the same as him, you're like tin-sardines, Get out of the pack, before they peel you back. Arrive at the office, spot on time, The clock on the wall hasn't yet struck nine, 'Good Morning Smithers Jones' 'The boss wants to see you alone' 'I hope its the promotion you've been looking for' 'Come in Smithers old boy' 'Take a seat, take the weight off your feet' 'I've some news to tell you' 'There's no longer a position for you' - 'Sorry Smithers Jones'. Put on the kettle and make some tea It's all a part of feeling groovie Put on your slippers turn on the TV It's all a part of feeling groovie It's time to relax, now you've worked your arse off But the only one smilin' is the sun tanned boss Work and work and work and work till you die There's plenty more fish in the sea to fry Classic track from a classic album! The Jam were a class apart in their day..
Katy Posted 28 April 2006 Posted 28 April 2006 To be honest I dont think you can diss anyones choice of best lyricist as its personal choice. I dont think 50 cent is for example but im not going to slate Muz for saying it as to him, he is. I said it was Morrissey because he has got me through some difficult points in my life with his lyrics and most of his creations are quite beautiful and poetic.

Lemon Harpic Posted 28 April 2006 Posted 28 April 2006 I like Radiohead and all... and there's no doubts that there's some good song-writing going on there, I do however find the lyrics often to be cliched and vapid. Usually Yorke makes his lyrics deliberately vapid, to reflect the vapidity of the suburban ennui against which much of his work rails. I think he also deliberately uses cliches in a similar way and for similar effect. Imo, you're being a bit harsh on the lad...
DaveyJ Posted 28 April 2006 Posted 28 April 2006 Paul Simon Brilliant. For example He was my brother very good. He Was My Brother He was my brother Five years older than I He was my brother Twenty-three years old the day he died Freedom writer They cursed my brother to his face Go home outsider This town's gonna be your buryin' place He was singin' on his knees An angry mob trailed along They shot my brother dead Because he hated what was wrong He was my brother Tears can't bring him back to me He was my brother And he died so his brothers could be free He died so his brothers could be free

DaveyJ Posted 28 April 2006 Posted 28 April 2006 My childhood was filled with the Bushmeisters dullcet tones as my sister was obsessed with her. I don't think any one can beat Out on the wiley, windy moors We'd roll and fall in green. You had a temper like my jealousy: Too hot, too greedy. How could you leave me, When I needed to possess you? I hated you. I loved you, too. Bad dreams in the night You told me I was going to lose the fight, Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely, On the other side from you. I pine a lot. I find the lot Falls through without you. I'm coming back, love, Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream, My only master. Too long I roamed in the night. I'm coming back to his side, to put it right. I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering, Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Heathcliff, it's me, your Cathy, I've come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Ooh! Let me have it. Let me grab your soul away. Ooh! Let me have it. Let me grab your soul away. You know it's me--Cathy! Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold, let me in-a-your window. Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, come home. I´m so cold. AHHHHHHH YAAAAA YAAAA OHHHH YAAAAAAA Emily Bronte would love it.
stez Posted 29 April 2006 Posted 29 April 2006 I'll throw Suzanne Vega into the hat. indeed 99.9 farhrenheit degrees stable now, whit rising possibilities it could be normal but it isn't quite could make you want to stay awake at night you seem to me, like a man on the verge of the burning 99.9 fahrenheit degrees pale as candle and your face is hot and if i touch you,i might get what you've got you seem to me, like a man on the verge of running 99.9 farhenheit degrees something cool against the skin is what you could be, something cool against the skin, is what you could be needing 99.9 farhenehit degrees you seem to me like a man on the verge of burning 99.9 fahrenheit degrees but don't forget the mighty mark king! Now How can it be That a love Carved out of caring Fashioned by fate Could suffer so hard From the games Played once too often But making mistakes Is a part Of life’s imperfections Born of the years Is it so wrong To be human after all Drawn into the stream Of undefined illusion Those diamond dreams They can’t disguise the truth That there is something about you Baby so right I wouldn’t be without you Baby tonight If ever our love Was concealed No one can say that We didn’t feel A million things And a perfect dream of life Gone Fragile but free We remain Tender together If not so in love And it’s not so wrong We’re only human after all These changing years They add to your confusion Oh and you need to hear The time that told the truth You know there’s something about you Baby so right I wouldn’t be without you Baby tonight Because there’s something about you Baby so right I couldn’t live without you Baby tonight (counter melody) Something about you The way you are so right I wouldn’t be Without you here tonight There’s something about you The way you are so right I couldn’t live Without you here tonight
Katy Posted 29 April 2006 Posted 29 April 2006 Suzanne Vega to me = 'My name is Luka, I live upstairs from you, yes I think you've seen me before.' Didnt realise what it was a bout when I was a kid but I do now and it's still quite topicial and a distressing subject today

Cobbo Posted 29 April 2006 Posted 29 April 2006 A green plastic watering can For a fake chinese rubber plant In the fake plastic earth That she bought from a rubber man In a town full of rubber plans To get rid of itself It wears her out, it wears her out It wears her out, it wears her out She lives with a broken man A cracked polystyrene man Who just crumbles and burns He used to do surgery On girls in the eighties But gravity always wins And it wears him out, it wears him out It wears him out, it wears him out She looks like the real thing She tastes like the real thing My fake plastic love But I can't help the feeling I could blow through the ceiling If I just turn and run And it wears me out, it wears me out It wears me out, it wears me out And if I could be who you wanted If I could be who you wanted All the time, all the time

willy37 Posted 6 June 2006 Posted 6 June 2006 i think different people have their own opinions of what lyrics mean to them and what lyrics they regard as "good" or important my personal favourite is a guy called ezra kire singer from Indk/ Morning Glory this is from a song called "gimme heroin" i'm puttin the hero back in heroin cuz i'm happier walkin dead stickin it in i never grew up and i'm sure i never will and i'm sure that what i'm sayin is irresponsible but i'm never havin kids and i'm never gettin hitched cuz i'm already married like a scratch to the itch they tried to tell me in school i'm a thug i said fock this piece of shit school cuz i'm on the drug gimme heroin jackin up again gimme heroin under my skin gimme heroin 'cuz i'll never win so gimme heroin graduate to I.V. league steppin up from pills intentional overdose- or just for thrills? everyone is sayin that i'm just bones and skin but it really is my soul that's coming thread bare and thin i'm feelin the sickness i can't hold it down it's been too long with but without it i'm down i don't wanna live cuz i'm fed up with it but i blame the CIA for importing this shit gimme heroin jackin up again gimme heroin under my skin gimme heroin 'cuz i'll never win so gimme heroin Social Sin i feel the warmth of the after glow a thoudsand years drift by but i don't know the land of nod knocks on the door and offers up just a little more...
