Nationwider Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 Easy. Bob Dylan. Never really listened to Dylan... ...so I'll say Morrissey.
Ultra Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 It has to be Moz. Billy Bragg (who's playing De Montfort Hall next week) isn't far off though...
Nationwider Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 It has to be Moz. Billy Bragg (who's playing De Montfort Hall next week) isn't far off though... Good call. In the "Not great, but consistently good" category, I'd like to add David Gedge and Elvis Costello. Oh, and Ray Davies, of course.
Finnegan Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 Dylan by so far it's not even funny. Whoever said Morrisey needs to be shot in the face. I'd go so far as to rate Molko over Morrisey, now he's a total cock.

While he may be a stupid mardy caaaaaant the Smiths were tearing and he wrote some tearing lyrics.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Bob Dylan by a country mile. Then Mike Scott followed by Matthew Good, Paul Noonan and Paul Weller.
Janx Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I was HOPING DESPERATELY to view this post and see some sensible answers, but NO, apart from a few, I am totally UN surprised to see the words Mike and Skinner plastered all over the thread. I give up, Seriously I do...... I would love it if just for once, someone could surprise me and not regurgitate what is rammed down their necks by the poison that is Radio 1 and todays Pop Music culture that is more about Marketing than Talent. Mike Skinner is NOT, I repeat NOT "important" as I keep hearing that total witch Wylie banging on about. Each to their own of course, I believe in freedom of choice and speech, but UNLESS you can see ALL the choices then its Hobsons choice surely??? Bye for now

Janx Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Agreed Janx. OK so it wasnt "plastered" there were only 2 MS posts, but I was pre-empting the deluge!!
Manwell Pablo Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I agree Mike Skinner is not important, simpletons. Crazy Frog for me. Genious.
The People's Hero Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I'm going to stick my neck out and mention Paul Heaton, songwriter/singer for Housemartins/The Beautiful South. Not as the best ever, but simply as worthy of note.

Not as the best ever, but simply as worthy of note. Deffo a quality pen. He seems to mix really strong messages into songs that appear light and fluffy on the surface. Elvis Costello, purely for his vitriol and angst and hate... quality! Neil Young. is one I have fallen into lately. Gary Barlow ...ooops did I write that or think it?
hairy Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Nick Cave by a country mile. and the two from Elbow are very good.
Lemon Harpic Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers. Unless he's been declared legally dead now, in which case let me be the 1,362nd person to vote for Morrissey
Ultra Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I'll add a few more names, past and present, into the mix.. Pete Townshend John Lydon Noel Gallagher Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs)
