Strokes Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 HOPP SCHWIIIZ!!! I hope they'll pull off a great game against "La Grande Nation" and win it 2-1 against "Les Bleus"! HOPP SCHWIIIZ!!! I'm with you on this one, come on the SWISS.
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I'm hoping for a good game, but I'm thinking France will be too strong this time, unlike in the qualification games. Henry looked in devastating form in the games leading up to the WC and with Ribery, the new French sensation, being promised a place in the starting XI, I'm anxious to see how he plays and how the Swiss will cope with him. Also, for people who don't know the French squad too well, watch out for Abidal and Malouda, the left back and winger respectively.
Matt Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 C'Mon Switzerland, I have them in the Sweepstake at work. Also, C'Mon Croatia who I also have in the Sweepstake at work. ...I think out of Brazil v Croatia, and France v Swiss, I have more chance with the Swiss
Jamesino_LCFC Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Lets hope the Swiss can prove that they are not only good at one sport
Ricey Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Would be great to see a on-form French side however I'd also love to see Switzerland spring a shock. Should be a good game.
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 So far, the Swiss have had a great chance with Frei flicking the ball onto the post from a freekick and France had a great chance but Ribery failed to punish a huge Senderos error. Possibly should've been a penalty as Henry's shot was blocked by a Swiss hand. A very poor display by the Russian referee so far as well. With Henry lying outside the pitch, seemingly injured, the Swiss continue to play on, as the rules state they can, but with the crowd whistling, the referee ultimately booked Magnin for not kicking the ball out of play! And straight after Makelele gets a freekick, and kicks it straight at the Swiss player Barnetta backing off, claiming that he hindered the freekick resulting in the Russian ref showing another yellow... Apart from those situations, he's failed to spot numerous fouls and was rightly jeered towards the end of the half.
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 The hand did not go to the ball, hence no penalty call. Correct decision by the referee. Would've loved to see that Barnetta free kick go into the net, though.

Would've loved to see that Barnetta free kick go into the net, though. It's debatable whether or not his hand was close enough to his body though. It's a reasonably legitimate claim.
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Well, by far the dullest game after England - Paraguay. Both teams a huge disappointment, and the worst ref to grace the World Cup yet. Depressing...
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 Well, I'm satisfied with that point... Not a dull match in my eyes, rather tense, because they were both cancelling each other out and you were waiting for that one particular impulse from a single player. I think my team defended very well against Henry (hardly any chances in the 2nd half) and Ribery was complete rubbish. Zidane had his occasional glimpses of genius, but he's getting old and will retire after this tournament. Barthez not the most confident goalkeeper. Bring on South Korea and Togo and we might end up 2nd in the group. I'm confident.
Jamesino_LCFC Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Piss poor game I'm sorry to say Worst yet in this World Cup -- however Brazil should make up for it tonight

Bring on South Korea and Togo and we might end up 2nd in the group. I'm confident. What game did you see? He was the ONLY Frenchman who was willing to run with the ball or without it into spaces and was offered zilch support. I can only scathe Wiltord, Vieira, Sagnol and Abidal enough, and Henry's touch absolutely deserted him. Ribery was, in my view, the only offensive French player to come out with any credit. As for the Swiss, they didn't show much either. Frei's last attempt with the hand just re-confirmed what a two-sided player he is. He's got the talent but can be a dirty bastard too. Senderos, bar his first half slip, was excellent though...
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Piss poor game I'm sorry to say Worst yet in this World Cup -- however Brazil should make up for it tonight It's up there with England - Paraguay, yes, however at least this one had a couple of clear cut chances, unlike the England one...
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 I hope we play with Senderos and Djourou next time... Mueller isn't completely fit and I guess he only played because of his experience (for Olympique Lyon in the French League). Sure, Switzerland didn't play very excitingly. But neither did France. I don't know why, but I see it as a compliment conceeding no goals from Henry, Wiltord, Zidane, Saha, Ribery... They're all supposed to be world-class players, but very often, they seemed too old (and thus too uninspired to play for their nation) for international contests, too slow and too selfish (apart from Zidane maybe). They could just as well end up the same way they did four years ago. 0 goals. 1 point. On a sidenote, France fielded about 95 % of players coming from French colonies, only Barthez (partially Spanish, though), Ribery and Sagnol are "pure" French. Cheaters...
Guest Gist Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 France really were disapointing today I would not feel very confident at all if I was a French fan.
davieG Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Most boring match so far, neither team looked like they wanted to win, they just didn't want to lose.
Anish Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 France were abysmal. Their coach will be in for some much deserved stick no doubt, that was a disgraceful performance and bad management. Playing 4-5-1 against the Swiss is madness, especially as none of the midfielders were even supporting Henry. I felt sorry for Henry in that game, he clearly does not enjoy playing on his own and there was no way he could do it all himself. By the way, why wasn't Malouda playing? I've picked him in my Sun Dreamteam!
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 Most boring match so far, neither team looked like they wanted to win, they just didn't want to lose. I'd give that price to England vs. Paraguay, absolutely no tension there at all. Agree with the second part of your statement.
davieG Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I'd give that price to England vs. Paraguay, absolutely no tension there at all. Agree with the second part of your statement. England wasn't so much boring as devoid of any skillful play, which I suppose could categorise it as boring. I suspect also that your vested interest in seeing Switzerland perform and mine/ours in seeing England is where the 'tension' comes in. I do think the Swiss edge it in terms of trying / deserving to win.
Guest Gist Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I really wanted Switzerland to win it, I thought they were right at the end from that great cross but unfortunetly it wasn't meant to be.
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 What a sh!te match that was It's getting a bit repetitious now, doesn't it? I have two words for you: ENGLAND PARAGUAY

I suspect also that your vested interest in seeing Switzerland perform and mine/ours in seeing England is where the 'tension' comes in. I do think the Swiss edge it in terms of trying / deserving to win. Well, there's a big difference in terms of expectations. Switzerland can go into this tournament without too many burdens, the first point against France is well-deserved. Any more gains onto our account will make the Swiss campaign more and more successful, it's like success in the making. England, however, have to deal with tons of comparisons with the '66 squad every time a WC is calling. And that's why I think failure is pre-programmed, already. Not once have the English Media and the English people given its team the permission to win. Then again, you have world-class players in the squad that we could only dream of. And with that huge amount of talent and skill comes the ego and I believe there's a lot of players who can't stand each other. Plus, you have that weird short-sighted Swedish turtle on the sidelines... It'd be interesting too see how others see your courageous (and honest) statement aboot your team... Spot on in my eyes!
Tommeh Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 but that match interests everyone else on this board, and when watching your own team you don't mine a shite game but when your watching as a neutral it's hard to stay awake
