NATIONAL SERVICE

Kids these days have a low boredom threshold, despite having practically everything they could ever want and maybe thats the problem.

National Service would never happen because of who Governs this namby pamby country of ours

I doubt kids today are any more bored then they were 30 years ago!

The problem today is that many of them have no respect for anything and most parents are no better.

Agreed, upbringing of kids is in the hands of there parents.......parents these days, either lack skills or are selfish in thinking the system (schooling, society) will tender there kids. Some obviously do have genuine problems but majority come under the selfish category IMO!!!

Gimmicks like that would never work, at the moment we live in a so called 'democratic' system that doesn't have any alternatives within the parties that are trying to gain power. Politics etc is too complicated to me, nothing seems to be what it is supposed to be, and there always is an alterior motive to what governments do........a honest man\woman would never succeed in politics!!!

I think you're right but I don't think we'll ever get the chance to prove it or see it proven. :):):)

Totally agree

Sometimes I wonder if the Oxford English will have to consider removing the word 'NO' from the dictionary due to lack of use! ;)

It's undoubtedly the cause of much of society's problems.

It's not very often you get just the one really nasty disrespectful child in a family, it's either all of them or none of them!

Look on your own street and you will see it's the same family's causing all the trouble and the one common denominator is the parents.

Dad's probably on the dole or doing 16 hours a week so as not to affect his income support, and mum's probably working in Wilkinson's or Tesco part time for the same reason

The one phrase they should bring back is "clip round the earhole"

Well, the government and 'doo-gooders' have put a stop to that one, no child can be disciplined either by it's own parents (which suggest to me that the government has more right to a child then a parent has), teacher or any authoritative body ie police!!! Kids aren't so stupid, they know this and have used this to there advantage and have led a generation of youths without respect to authority!!

The government had the wonderful idea of giving holidays and 'bribes' to juvinile convicts, what a load of nonsense, they should be giving holidays to the victims.

Parents are the first cause to the ASBO generation, the government policies is the second, but overall the cocktail of the two will have a lasting effect for generations to come!!! :(

Like most things these days because we are all basically lazy everything gets given a glamourous name you are inclined to forget they are nasty things or punishments, it almost makes you want to become a Pedo or get an ASBO, by the way is that higher or lower than an MBE or VC.

Even Vandals, look where that's derived from

A Germanic people, originally perhaps from the Baltic area, who settled in the Danube valley in the 4th-c. Pushed W by the Huns, they invaded Gaul (406), crossed into Spain, conquered Roman Africa (429–39), and sacked Rome (455). The Byzantine general Belisarius reconquered N Africa in 533–4. The modern word vandalism derives from their name.
Talk about anti-heroes.

Crime and misdemenours are unintentionally glamourised by the media and we unknowingly lap it up and give them some misguided credibility.

Pedofile should be banned as a word they are child abusers

ASBO should be given a banning order, these people should be ostracised by society and be labelled outcasts or similar.

Vandals should be called property destroyers

etc

Let's call them what they are not some over used media glorified word.

I think it's a great idea..... especially as I am probably to old to have to do it now!!!

Most people are not told about what happened when we had conscription before.

Many servicemen, most of them still teenagers, were the subject of chemical, biological and nuclear radiation tests. The government of the time were aware of the possible consequences but chose to cover them up.

Decades later it was noted that the children of the nuclear test veterans had genetic disorders many times the national average, and many of the veterans themselves suffered and/or died from leukaemia in middle age. The US, Australian and New Zealand governments admitted liability and paid compensation to their citizens affected. The UK government, uniquely, refused - a position it continues to hold to this day.

Suffice to say, if my MP (Keith Vaz, who is well aware of the above facts) should vote to reintroduce conscription, it will be the last thing he ever does.

Seems like most of the yoof near our house are still experimenting with the chemical and the biological...

Homeless ex-servicemen

example no.2

Example No.3

In the 50's and 60's ex service-men had jobs/families to come home to. The divorce rate was not as high as it today and children only ever knew one dad or mum. They were not forced into the army because of their background or social standing. Jobs were aplenty a the skills needed were low. Now adays you need qualifications for the the least meanial jobs. In Leicester alone there were the engineering, hosiery and shoe industries. All gone if not almost.

It's true there is a lack of respect and sometimes I myself say some need a 'clip round the ear' but a 'clip round the ear' will not resolve the problem. There will still be kids from broken homes, spoilt, have no interaction with their parents or have prospects.

I don't know what the solution but I'm pretty sure National Service is not the answer.

so we're using this on the assumption that every young person in the UK in immature, lacks respect etc etc?

Obviously i wasn't alive to see it, but of all the stories i hear from my dad, relatives and their friends etc it sounds that kids in earlier generations were just as bad and mischievous, only difference is you lot are now grown up and think not of your past

Unfortunately Ric Flair, as good and successful as point 2 might sound, Political correctness and these muppets of Human Rights will always prevent such things.

In my mums day (she's 60 this year) the police and teachers had a lot more 'power' to discipline kids so it was not just left to the parents (those who could be arsed)

Im trying to being my 3 year old up to be respectful, kind and honest I cant vouch for other parents but I dont want to grow old in a country that im afraid to step out of my front door in, for fear of being battered. Something needs to be done, but not all youngsters are disrespectful and partake in thuggery lets just get that point straight.

Yeh i was just picking up on the original post

Come on then...get some in.

What do you reckon ~ young people lack respect, abuse alcohol and drugs and mess about killing each other with knives when they aren't having fights and vandalising bus shelters or asking people to buy fags for them from the corner shop. Isn't it about time we reintroduced National Service to teach them some manners and values ~ get them to do some badly needed social roles?

Now if Mr Discom. had said SOME young people......

These knives amnesties make me laugh, i know the police are trying to start somewhere but really, if someone wants a weapon that bad, i'm sure they could find a replacement.

They should put a camera above each 'weapon bin' and nail every fker that puts one in

Anyone see on Central news the other week, this is no joke, someone had put an anti-tank rocket launcher in one of the bins, I nearly fell off my chair.

Quite a pleasant world we live in!

Oh and back on topic, no i don't think we should have national service, for all the human rights we give to criminals and non-British citizens, why should we have our own freedom of choice taken away from us. As a form of punishment it would not work, not in this modern day of tactical warfare.

Yes, I thought it would be best if I took it off you, you are well known for shooting your load randomly!!!! :P

Seriously though, these amnesties are mere PR stunts, thos that want a knife will have one and those that think they should have a knife will have one. It's trying to convince those that think they need one that need persuation and those that want one for violent means that need to be caught\stopped. IMO, there needs to be more deterants ie tougher sentences for anyone carrying a knife!!!
