Collymore Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 looks like they're going to break the £1 a litre mark. Petrol prices are poised to break through the key psychological barrier of £1 a litre. The Middle East conflict has pushed the cost of crude oil to record highs, with prices threatening to top $80 a barrel. Diesel prices hit an average of 98.93 pence a litre on Sunday while unleaded petrol hit a record price of 97.02p. A top motoring body has called on the government to freeze petrol tax to prevent pump prices breaking the £1 a litre barrier. link I paid 108p for a litre of petrol at a filling station in Brighton this morning....quite put me off my breakfast.Nick Bowman, Brighton people like this need to shop around though! Annoys me that they complain after paying it!!! FFS! SHOP AROUND!!!!! WHO FECKING PAYS THAT MUCH FOR FUEL!!! Get a grip Nick you bell face

Knighton Matt Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Key psychological barrier? Is the author of this on LSD or something? Seriously though that is pretty shite I might ride a horse to the office tomorrow and park the mare in the visitors bay.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Key psychological barrier? Is the author of this on LSD or something? Seriously though that is pretty shite I might ride a horse to the office tomorrow and park the mare in the visitors bay. The one ("enter monetary unit here") price per litre is the psychological barrier in most developed nations that sell petrol by the litre (as opposed to the American practice of prices-per-gallon). People see the $1/1quid per litre price as the price level at which they can take their bitching to a whole new level. People in Australia, back in 2000 were bitching about the imminent $1 per litre price at the pump (that was a shade under 50p/litre) Over here in Canada people have been bitching about the $1 per litre (that's around 45p/litre) price for a year or so (it happened quickly, just before the big Hurricane Katrina thing in the US, we hit $1/litre. Soon after, the price spiralled to $1.40/litre (62p/litre) within a matter of days. It slipped back down to around $1 and has rarely been seen below $0.90 (40p/litre) since). What really gets on my nerves is the attitude of people over here. They think prices over $1 are criminal. The reason is they all drive cars with 5L V8 engines, or they drive pickup trucks and SUVs that struggle to make 20mpg freewheeling downhill with the wind beind them. They buy big cars with even bigger engines, then moan that the cost of fuel is bankrupting them. Ridiculous.
Katy Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Supermarkets tend to be cheaper, I refuse to pay a quid a litre the amount of miles I have to do. It takes the piss it really does
Daggers Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Higher fuel prices = cost of living index increase = higher house price values = larger player wage demands = new first team shirt every month You saw it here first, bloody chemical companies!
macbeth Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 initially i refused to pay 5 shilling a gallon when it passed that psychological barrier.........and have relented at every other one since

Sadly it won't happen as quickly as you'd like. :pinch: The theory is sound tho
Matt Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Yep I went yesterday and its creaped back up to 97p. Everyone threatens a boycott, it goes down (by hardly anything but something better than nothing I spose) but then before you know it its crept back up to 97p, with threats of hitting the £1 mark.
Guest Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 And still Shell and BP et al make billions of pounds (sterling :thumbup) of profit.....
Northants Fox Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 And still Shell and BP et al make billions of pounds (sterling :thumbup) of profit..... Shell and BP have always made the most money, i no longer have a car so fuel prices only affect me when the Buses put the fares up <_< There's a BP Garage just up the road from me and the prices there are always just higher than the Supermarket (ie Sainsburys on Weeden Road near Sixfields the Cobblers Ground.)

Interesting... and how does the average price of petrol on the Kettering Road compare to the Wellingborough Road?

This is probably just a load of rubbish but I always though that was because Supermarkets obviously sell much more than fuel, therefore can afford to charge slightly less than garages who obviously sell mostly fuel. Understand, As I said that is probably a load of rubbish but thats what i've heard and when you think about it, its a good explanation...

I've always heard that supermarket petrol isn't as good quality as your mainstream garages (something to do with the refining?) but I once saw an esso lorry filling up a supermarket petrol station so ....
The People's Hero Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 At three garages round me it's 99.6 for unleaded. Just snaffled some up for 97p. Further increases expected. Bollocks.

Northants Fox Posted 17 July 2006 Posted 17 July 2006 Interesting... and how does the average price of petrol on the Kettering Road compare to the Wellingborough Road? That depends where you go, there are a couple of Petrol Stations closed, one is a BP Station on Wellingborough Road the other was an independant Station on Kettering Road, mind you i'm not really supprised at the second one as there's a Morrisons just down the Road. It's a very good explaination to add to my post earlier BP are a Penny dearer than the Supermarkets and Shell are a Penny dearer than BP

Guest Posted 18 July 2006 Posted 18 July 2006 I'm laughing at the Chelsea tractor drivers at the moment. It's a pity the schools have broken up, as this would be even funnier.
