Anyone see Oliver on Jonathan Ross? He was saying how at one point he was confronted by a parent for 'putting all that healthy rubbish' into school dinners now, and the parent was bottle-feeding a 1-year old with cola at the same time

I would say that's it's not just obesity that is a problem of unhealthy eating/living, but also malnutrition (if anyone watched the original program with Oliver when he visited the doctor who was talking about young kids loosing their teeth and vomiting up faeces, it's that kind of thing that's a big problem too). If anyone watched Ian Wright's Unfit Kids (yes, I watch too much TV...), although the majority of children there were overweight, a few were just so sedentary in their lifestyles that they were as unfit as the bigger children. In that program as well you had parents fighting against what he was trying to do, and saying 'my child doesn't enjoy exercise so why should he do it?'. There is a great resistance when people are 'preached to' and there is really nothing that can be done at the end of the day if people are that stubborn to change, but I don't think that should stop people from trying to change things even if others don't like it. Let's not mollycoddle people, what he's said is true and he has a right to say it, if you don't like it then ignore him.

Ever consider that he might have been lying / greatly exagerating for the purpose of shock? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are plenty of chav twats out there that don't know what they're meant to do with their Designer Baby, but Jamie Oliver's crusade is rediculous. Fatty foods and sugar are part of a balanced diet!

As it is TV and newspapers I've no doubt that there is some exaggeration in there. But he's only addressing the people it applies to, not saying that all parents feed their children rubbish.

Balanced yes but not the whole diet.

Balanced yes but not the whole diet.

Not the whole diet, but they do form a part of it, and so we should not completely take them off of the menu at schools. Limit the amount of times they are sold, but don't completely remove them.

I'm sure there is some fat and sugar in the menu's that JO has recommended. Not forgetting that is should be the correct type of fat, like fish oil not some lard that's used to cook burgers in.

Im sorry but I see NO justification for this...why would you have it on th menu at all? If you wan to have sweets and fat then fine, ply your kids with them at home, thats your choice... I would rather know that whilst my son or daughter was in the "care" of the school, that they were at least getting a decent meal, after all I cant control the meals during the day, but at evenings and weekends I can administer "treats"...

I agree Jankers but some people like to ply there kids with crisps, chips and sh1te, which is sad!!! I would like the no, no policy but I suppose the minimum would be 'everything inmoderation' policy!!!

Dude I don't have kids 'cos I'm a bit young for them, but when I do, I won't be plying them with sweets and fat all the time, 'cos I don't want them getting fat or having health problems. But that's not to say I'm not gona let them have sweets and the occasional fatty meal when they're at home - as long as they're active instead of lazy (like meself), it'll all get burnt off and they won't become overweight.

I don't really see the problem in keeping some of the "junk" options on the menu once or twice per week. It wouldn't do too much harm, 'cos there'd still be 5 healthy options available during the week (2 when the junk is on and 3 when it isn't). If you were so bothered about them getting a decent meal, why don't you make it for them at home?? After all, they are your children, not the schools. And they would be getting their decent meal if you bothered to cook it for them wouldn't they?? :):P

Joke post right?

Did you actually READ my post, I am saying that I DO cook for my kid/s and that if you leave crap on the menu, you cannot tell how much they are or arent eating!!

So when you DO have kids you may feel differently if they seem to get fatter whilst you are dilligently cooking healthy meals at home!!

Not entirely. Some of the things in it are true and perfectly reasonable imo. I won't exactly understand your way of thinking (which, no disrespect, is a little confusing to me at times) until I have kids of my own. But trying to be a little reasonable and not knowing you or your situation, I don't really see a lot wrong with it. Argue with it all you want or insult my intelligence/knowledge of things, I'm really not fussed. But I don't see a problem with what I said in my previous post or this one :)

(re-read your post and I get that you said you can't control meals during the day, but you can administer "treats" at evenings and weekends, which is where I didn't completely follow your thinking/sarcasm at the time of the first read)

Be my guest mate, insults on an internet forum really aren't a thing that affect me. I'll have my opinion on things and you'll have yours, as everybody will have theirs. If you don't agree with things I say that's fine, if I don't agree with things you say I'll let you know as well, but at the end of the day it's an opinion and not everybody is the same :)
