Ian Posted 16 December 2004 Posted 16 December 2004 I believe Walkers contract is up in the summer, with this in mind i was wondering whether or not the club should try and sell him in the January transfer window. We know he is one of the high earners in the club and the contract he will be offered in the summer will maybe be only 1/3rd of its current value. Is he realistically going to accept this? I look around the premiership and there are several clubs who do not have quality keepers , Man City (I know weaver is back but will he be their number 1?), Pompey,Liverpool, hey even Arsenal could do worse, and certainly allot who don't have quality back up. Now walks could move to the prem (even taking into account his age) and command a far better package than the one he will get from us. I reckon we could still get 500K for Walker and maybe that is money that we could use in the Striker/defender market? Just a few thoughts for you to ponder on.
Matt Posted 16 December 2004 Posted 16 December 2004 Apparently his injury is 'Career Threatening' so it would be a risk for a team to come in pay money for him with him still injured...IF he does recover for his injury, whos saying it won't re-occur? e.t.c, There is lots of risks to take on! -To be honest I think we have seen the last of Walker...Either because he is going to leave because of contract expiery, or beacuse of injury! And I can see CL taking Taylor perminently...Taylor IMO will be now our new first team GK. (< Sorry to point out the obvious about Taylor, )
bluefox Posted 16 December 2004 Posted 16 December 2004 I have to agree. I think Ian Walker is finished as a player and will now have to make a living elsewhere. He has been good for us and if his career is over then I hope the club give him an opportunity to say goodbye a la a Flowers at Wolves a couple of seasons ago
Anish Posted 16 December 2004 Posted 16 December 2004 I can't see how any Premiership team would pay for Ian Walker when his contract is up in July - unless they are absolutely desparate. It simply doesn't make any business sense.
Scow Posted 16 December 2004 Posted 16 December 2004 Not just that, no club will pay for player with a long term injury.
shen Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Could we get him back as no.2 Why as no. 2 and not as no. 1?
lesta fox Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 I would have him back as no1 he is a good keeper better than what we have at the moment
Strokes Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Bring back an old thread for a day - give them a chance to be on page 1 of General Chat for a day and relive their past glories. They might be old, but they can still contribute.
Benji Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 We had a thread like this a few months ago i remember saying how liverpool's recent success has stemmed from Reina being brought... i think we miss walker more than any other of our recent players that left!
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 agreed, i reckon we would have conceeded about 5-6 less goals with him in goal, plus his kicking was terrific whereas rab & hendo simply can't get the distance walker used to. . i can't beleive that walker's renegociated contract would have been any more than rab is currently on.
Disillusioned Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Have you lot been browsing through Spec Savers latest rose tinted selection? Get real! Walker is little better than Douglas. Why do you think Spurs off-loaded him to us? Because he had lost it physically and mentally. Walker's career has been blighted by a bad shoulder injury sustained several seasons ago; the effects of which he has never really shaken off. He is very slow to get down to low long range shots. He is especially suspect from free kicks. As for his kicking I cannot believe what I am reading. In our promo season he was all flappin' and a cackin'...

The People's Hero Posted 1 March 2006 Posted 1 March 2006 Walker was a good keeper, very good at this level, but isn't now the force he once was. Douglas is nowhere near Walker, in my opinion.
