In those days, the magazines were printed on cheap paper using cheap print-sets. Consequently, boys would have to squint in order to make out what the story was on the letters page while attempting to dump their muck into a wank sock (tissues had not been invented and toilet paper was of the shiny tracing-peper variety). This squinting in poor light conditions led to blindness across the developing world and was the main reason that the Government of the day created Channel4 and allowed them to screen foreign films with boobs and muff. All of this is factually accurate
