bluefox9er Posted 3 February 2007 Posted 3 February 2007 Sorry, I missed this thread when it started & can't find it again ( I noly just joined and found this forum for city fans by accident on google). Anyways, my 2 cents on the best Indian eateries in Leicester are... 1. Khyber ( Melton Rd), damn expensive, but the starters are **exquisite** and make up for the good but-no-fantastically-good mains 2. Tiranga ( Melton Rd, opposite khyber) Authentic Indian cafe/bar grill, excellent veggie choices, really friendly service, cheap as chips and fantastic food & beers 3. Marten Inn ( marten street, off catherine street) tucked away in a very odd part of the inner city, this place rocks...fantastic food, superb service and by no means expensive. MUST try their house passion juice, and daily specials. well worth a shot. 4. "The Blues" in oadby...great food, great service. edges 'flamingo' for me because flamingo's service is simply horrible. you'll find me at one of these joints after every city game, lose, draw ( or in the unlikely event) win!

Trumpet Posted 3 February 2007 Posted 3 February 2007 Tamarind is nice. Hinckley road it think, next to Ladbrokes?? Tis indeed, never been there but when catching the bus from outside the junction i always see people going in and out. Looks like a nice place.

Unit Posted 4 February 2007 Posted 4 February 2007 What a hairdressers. I have to get the 16 bus outside there on my way to footy training. that's the one, the 16 runs past it. it won the 'best curry in leicester' award, that speaks for itself surely. it's soooooo good. namaste is over the road and is a better place to go if you're trying to impress the mrs as it's closely seated etc. tamarind is tops for food though

Babylon Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 Friends On Melton Road.... so good it makes me fancy a curry at 8.24am.
blue blood Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 Friends On Melton Road.... so good it makes me fancy a curry at 8.24am. a bit on the pricey side but defo quality and can taste the freshness in the food.
Dr The Singh Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 The place on charles street, next to the old Showrooms is supposed to be really good, I have been recommended this from a really good source!! I don't eat take away restaurant curries in Leicester much, my mrs is from Brum and the food there is so much superior and cheaper, but if you like sizzlers\punjabi type food then Barcode on Narborough road is good, so is flamingo's!! Fro your typical restaurents, friends is good, so is Khyber, I also like the Namaste on Hinckley road!!!

The food there is cheaper and completely inferior as a result! There's only one place in Birmingham I can recommend - the rest are complete pants!!
bluefox9er Posted 6 February 2007 Author Posted 6 February 2007 The food there is cheaper and completely inferior as a result! There's only one place in Birmingham I can recommend - the rest are complete pants!! Must admit , i havn't had terribly good reports about brum, but it's always down to a matter of taste! Against better judgement, I went to " Flamingoes" on Sat night after the match...ordered at 8.00pm and starters arrived at 9.50pm...same old shoddy service. we left without paying for the mains
Ultra Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 At least that time you didn't have to pay £20+.... My favourites are Curry Fever, Belgrave Road Ashoka, Melton Road Nila Palace, London Road T & K Balti House, Green Lane Road
Dr The Singh Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 The food there is cheaper and completely inferior as a result! There's only one place in Birmingham I can recommend - the rest are complete pants!! The Sportsman far exceeds anything in Leicester, and the lesser The Vine also does. I know people from cov, Leicester making trips to these establihments just for the food!!! These are your punjabi pubs, traditional clay oven food, they also do curries!! There's loads of other places in smethwick and west brom, just check the pubs on the high street, they all do food, all traditionally cooked!! And one thing you will see in these places is the local punjabi's eating in them, which tell's it's own story!!!! I don't eat on Ladypool road etc and i'm not a fan of the 'curry\balti' restaurants!!!!
Leicfox Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 Forget the place i went to last time i was down, i think it was called Friends. Nice though.

I might check it out next time in there
Dr The Singh Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 no kidding..its * always * a good sign if local people are eating in these places. where in brum is 'the sportsman'? I might check it out next time in there It's not far from junction 1 of the M5, go towards West Brom centre, and about 200 yards down, there is a very unglamorous building on the right, it's called 'The Sportsman Bar'!!!. If you go further down, you get into West Brom high street, and there's loads of pubs that do similar kind of food!! Saturday nights it's very lively, with alot of the pubs with live bhangra bands!!! There's also a few pubs on smethwcik high street aswell!! Be warned, these aren't places to go for a romantic meal with the mrs, they are traditional pubs. most are rustic, that cater in food rather then ambience but you will not be disapointed, me and my brothers are hoping to make a trip soon!!
