Ric Flair Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Who would you say is the best English footballer that never got called up to play for England. I'm not sure whether to include Englishmen that were then called up to other nations, because that makes it quite easy. Let's just try and recall some good English players that never represented England or any other Nation.
Leonisco Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Ryan Giggs. Born and raised here, so technically he counts.
lookwhaticando Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Steve Guppy is just what we need for the national side right about now. He doesn't count, though, because he was called up before.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Steve Bruce is always the one that springs to my mind too.
Ric Flair Posted 30 March 2007 Author Posted 30 March 2007 Tony Cottee ? Got a few caps for England Ryan Giggs. Born and raised here, so technically he counts. Read the question Leon What about Mark Bright?
Leonisco Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Read the question Leon What about Mark Bright? Oh right, didn't read it properly. I still can't understand why Kevin Nolan hasn't got a call-up yet, although I suppose that doesn't really count as it could still happen (especially if Big Sam gets the job ).
Simi Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Junior Lewis Great shout. Benjamin did play for Jamaica.
Hullfox Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Dwight Yorke. Wanted to play for England but El Tel said no. He was good once.
act smiley Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Ryan Giggs. Born and raised here, so technically he counts. Doesn't. Born in Wales, moved to England aged 1.
Finnegan Posted 31 March 2007 Posted 31 March 2007 Ryan Giggs.Born and raised here, so technically he counts. Contrary to popular belief, Ryan Giggs (born in CARDIFF) wasn't eligible for England until the residency laws were introduced a few seasons back. At which point he was already a well established Welsh international. Further on the contrary to further common belief, he's actually a fairly proud Welshman and always has been. He is (/was) more qualified to play for Sierra Leone than England - having no English parents, grandparents or probably great grand-parents either. All the crap about "he played for England youth!" is just that, crap. He played for England Schoolboys which purely means, yes, he went to school in England. Michael Owen, however, while I'm on my high-horse, is only playing for England because the closest hospital to his Welsh town (somewhere in Flintshire I think) was in Chester, hence that's where he was born. His parents, I think (though I may be wrong), are Welsh and Scottish!
dandannieldanok Posted 31 March 2007 Posted 31 March 2007 I know he was capped but I wouldn't call the odd friendly really playing for England. Matt Le Tissier.
